  • Peaceful, simple site on the edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park
  • A 10-minute drive from Hay-on-Wye; canoe hire five minute away
  • Dog-friendly site within walking distance of two local pubs
Rural, you say? Why yes indeed – it’s a fitting term indeed for Pentwyn Dingle Rural Campsite, a peaceful Powys site on the edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park and at the foot of the Black Mountains. There’s a properly middle-of-the-countryside feel here, with trees all around and a brook running through the site, but it’s also in a handy spot a mere 10 minutes’ drive from Hay-on-Wye. As you may guess, this is a fab location for folk looking to check out the stunning scenery nearby: there are plenty of walking and bike routes to follow locally, and the owners also recommend days of canoeing on the River Wye and horse riding in the Black Mountains. Fancy mixing that up with a bit of town time? Brecon, Crickhowell and Talgarth are all nearby, and of course there’s some excellent pottering to be done in the bookshops of Hay-on-Wye. Back at base, facilities have been kept very minimal – just a drinking water tap and chemical waste disposal point (you’ll need to bring toilet facilities with you, and you’re kindly asked to take all rubbish away with you). Keeping things simple means more space to focus on the fresh air and enjoy a bit of birdsong. Being a laidback kind of place, dogs are welcome to join you – they’ll probably enjoy a paddle in the brook, as indeed you might at the end of a long walk. Campfires and barbecues are permitted if you’d like an alfresco meal, or you can stroll over to one of two local pubs within a mile of the site.

Primitive grass tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Loved the location. Easy to get to from the main road but far enough into the countryside for some genuine peace and quiet. There is a good gravel track through the site and the grass is well maintained without being mowed to within an inch of its life, therefore allowing plants like Daisies and Wood Anenomes to flourish. I didn't see one piece of litter on the site, which was a refreshing change especially as campers have to take their rubbush with them. I pitched up right by the brook and there was a little "beach" which my dogs loved. Martin, the owner, and his handsome assistant, Wilf the Springer Spaniel, were really friendly and welcoming. Although there are no loos, there is a very clean Elsan disposal area. Lots of lovely walks from the site with views of the surrounding hills and Glasbury is about half a mile away if you want to go for a drink. Wish I could have stayed longer than one night but I'll definitely be returning.

Disliked: Nothing to dislike.

Primitive grass tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Beautiful setting, super quiet and a real feel of old school camping. No designated pitches added to the wildcamp feel, a wonderful change from the usual uniformity of other sites. There were facilities for fresh drinking water and waste disposal too, though no showers or toilets (yet! The owner said he's put in a planning application). We'll definitely be staying again.

Disliked: Nothing at all. There was no phone/4G signal on EE (Vodafone works), but for us this wasn't a negative.

Primitive grass tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite

Liked: A campsite just how we like it. Back to nature, a stream running alongside through a green dingle. Dragonflies, squirrels, grey wagtails and buzzards spotted. An excellent pub a good mile's walk; beautiful scenery. We walked one day, and visited Hay on Wye the next. Lovely hosts too.

Disliked: Nothing, the grass was cut short too, which in our experience is rare!

Primitive grass tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite

Liked: What a beautiful site! It's lush and so peaceful; surrounded by trees, the babbling brook to one side and lovely flat grassed areas adjoining. It's sheltered too. Local attractions are very close. Martin, the owner, is very welcoming. The site is ideal for campervans and wild campers, with pottable water and chemical waste facilities.

Disliked: None. Its basic, but beautiful.

Local attractions

The walking possibilities around here are many and varied, ranging from gentle circular walks that stop at the pub for all-important rehydration to uphill clambers at Pen y Fan – the highest peak in south Wales is about a 40-minute drive from the site. If you fancy a different way to get out and about, check out the local canoe hire place and the activity centre that’s got options for caving, rafting, paddleboarding and other outdoor antics – both places are about five minutes’ drive away. Llangorse Lake (20 minutes’ drive) is another fine pick for a day out whether you’re after walks or watersports. Time for something less energetic? Perhaps head to Hay-on-Wye (10 minutes) to see the castle and poke your nose into all the bookshops, or make a break for Brecon (20 minutes) for a march around the regimental museum. Also within a half-hour drive are pretty Crickhowell and the flower-flanked pathways of Brobury House Gardens.
