  • Small family-friendly site in the foothills of the Brecon Beacons
  • Just off the A470, a 10-minute drive from Brecon
  • Peaceful setting next to woodland with a small stream running through
Stand by for action… Rhydywernen Farm Camping Site’s fab family farm location is in a most handy spot for getting out into the Brecon Beacons National Park for days of hiking, mountain biking, horse riding, canoeing, gorge walking and pretty much any other activity you’re up for in this part of Powys. And then, stand by for chilling out… for this is a most peaceful location, with spacious pitches backing onto woodland and a small river that’s prime territory for such classic country pursuits as skimming stones and poking about with little fishing nets in search of minnows. Away from the water's edge guests are encouraged to meet the site's miniature donkeys, helping to feed them and put them to bed in the evenings. Barbecues with a backdrop of the Brecon Beacons are of course a fine way to sort dinner on site (firepits are available to hire, with firewood to buy). If the weather’s not up to it (or you’re just in the mood to let someone else do all the work), there are plenty of pubs, cafés and restaurants up the road in Brecon. Work up an appetite for your eats with an hour-long stroll along quiet country paths, or get in the car for the easy 10-minute journey to town along the A470 (also a handy road for getting to other corners of the national park or heading across country to the north or south). Please note this is a family-friendly site: no open fires, no bad language and no loud music after 10.30pm please. Facilities on site include toilets, a washing-up area and hot showers (just take note that during popular times, the water pressure may be a little lower than usual).

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked I liked the location because it was close to Pen y fan and a 40 minute drive to the four waterfalls walk which our group walked
The toilets and showers were clean and close to where we camped
The owners were friendly and helpful when giving us information about the campsite and where we could go for walks I was especially grateful for their advice about where to park to go up pen y fan for a child friendly path.
Animals on site were great - kept children amused for hours i

Disliked Only 2 toilets I could see. We were lucky the campsite was not full but if it was could have been a long wait

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Great facilities for the price, clean and private showers and toilets, washing up area had a microwave, fridge and kettle. Beautiful site near a lovely brook. Beautifully dark and incredible view of the stafs.

Disliked Bit of road noise from the A470, but a fair trade off for how easily accessible it is.

Powered cement/asphalt and grass travel trailer campsite

Liked Picturesque surroundings in Brecon National Park. Peaceful at our pitch even though it was busy in both camping fields- could hear the river and birds. Nice size pitch. Owners very friendly and welcoming. Lovely apple juice and fresh eggs. We walked from the site to a local waterfall and drove to walk up Pen y fan. Kids enjoyed saying hello to the goats and paddling in the stream. Good WiFi connection, meant we could check the weather and plan our activities.

Disliked Facilities were over used due to the amount of people staying whilst we were there; school DofE group, guide unit and friends/families camping together meant showers were hit and miss as other campers not so clean in the toilets/washing up area! Not the fault of the owners)

Powered cement/asphalt and grass travel trailer campsite

Liked Lovely site, with goats and donkeys to see.

Pitches we nicely spaces and the most gorgeous river/stream to play in. Unfortunately we didn't have good weather so didn't manage to get much time in.

Shower powerful and plenty of individual cubicles with sinks.
The individual / mixed gender loos were a bit stinky, as no window/ ventilation in them.

However owners were lovely, greeted us and were visible on site, bought bag of wood for £6 and borrowed a fire pit.

Disliked Washing up water was cold on 2 occasions when i went.

Local attractions

So much activity awaits in the Brecon Beacons National Park: pick a gentle hike around woods and waterfalls if you want, or get stuck in to scaling Pen y Fan (25 minutes’ drive away and southern Britain’s highest mountain). Horse riders can saddle up at the stables 10 minutes away, while those who like to zoom around on mountain bikes can get some speed up at BikePark Wales (25 minutes). The outdoorsy antics don’t end there – Brecon’s something of a hub for such things, and activity centres around the town can sort you with rafting, canoeing, high ropes courses and gorge scrambling. All sound a bit too exhausting? Take a more leisurely ride on the Brecon Mountain Railway (25 minutes) before heading home via the Penderyn whisky distillery (20 minutes). Break out of the Beacons for trips to some of the area’s other attractions: Llandovery Castle is half an hour away, as is the book-loving town of Hay-on-Wye. A little further north but worth a trip are the lakes of the Elan valley and the red kite feeding station in Rhyader; both are around an hour’s drive away.
