  • Small eco-friendly Ceredigion site with handcrafted facilities
  • A 10-minute drive from Borth beach and 15 minutes from Aberystwyth
  • Space to relax outside or in the hand-built roundhouse
Heading for the hills, or coming to the Ceredigion coast? Both options are easily possible when you stay at Ffosygrafel Isaf Camping. This small family-run site is at the southern end of the Dyfi Biosphere and about a 10-minute drive from the seaside town of Borth. That location means you can mix and match countryside and coastal days out as you like, perhaps taking a good long walk along the Wales Coast Path, hitting the beach, hiking through the local hills or looking out for the big birds at Dyfi Osprey Project. There are plenty more family attractions around too – including the Animalarium and Silver Mountain Experience – and Aberystwyth is about 15 minutes’ drive away for shops, places to eat and cultural attractions. It’s not all about getting out and about though, because this is also a lovely site for some chillout time. Pitches are nicely spacious and have access to facilities that have been mostly handcrafted by the owners using reclaimed materials where possible. The central feature is the splendid roundhouse, which has washing-up areas as well as sofas where you can relax and shelter from the weather (whether that’s rain or sun…) As this is an eco-friendly site there are compost toilets and spacious solar-heated showers for guest use. It’s a fine spot for a digital detox too, with no wifi and little phone signal (although most people can get decent reception on the ‘phone bench’ in the field above the roundhouse when needed).

Primitive grass and earth tent campsite

Liked 1. A really nicely located, quiet, simple campsite with the benefit of a communal ‘hobbit house’ lounge/cooking hut which would be particularly great if rainy weather.
2. Price (£12.50 I think / 1 person with tent / night) was good.
3. Friendly owner lives in house on site.
4. Free solar showers worked well on hot sunny days. Not sure how good they would be on less summery days.
5. Good space between tent pitches.
6. Level large flat tent pitches with sloping ground between.
7. Nice fire pit with benches round.
8. Free electric sockets in communal ‘hobbit hut’ space very useful for hair dryer and phone charger.
9. Good sign posts from roads help find the site in quite a rural area.

Disliked A few suggestions / comments from an experienced traveler and camper to try to help further improve the site, which is already nice (not criticisms):
1. Install proper flush toilets. The compost toilets are just nasty, stinky and fly-ridden. Not nice nor necessary.
2. Washing facilities poor. Maybe some cubicles with wash basins would nice that were not in with the stinking compost toilets.
3. More hooks and shelves in the showers needed for clothes, towel, and soap/shampoo etc.
4. A picnic bench on each camping plot and more in common areas too.
5. Install wifi - modern communication is necessary for most people, and those who actively don’t want it don’t have to log on.
6. The sharp corner exit from the campers car park to the access track is very tight, maybe change this to avoid risk of scratches to car.
7. Try to enforce campervans not having TV on loud or music playing loudly.
8. Stinking compost toilets next to communal firepit rather spoils its use.
9. Put a large communal dining table and benches/chairs in the ‘hobbit hut’.
10. The neighbour land owner produces amazing vegetables commercially so maybe have a ‘honesty cupboard/fridge’ in the hobbit hut where some could be bought. Maybe other local produce too.
11. For the fire pit, a small restocked daily stack of free logs would be nice and encourage its use. Also it is positioned in a spot with no view. Maybe relocate up the hill to get good views from it and also further from camping area to avoid sparks damaging tents.
