  • Quiet family-run farm site with scenic views of the open countryside
  • A 15-minute drive to Berwick-upon-Tweed and 30 mins' walk to Foulden
  • Within 20 minutes' drive of beaches at St Abbs and Coldingham
Lazing about is very much on the agenda at Shepherd’s Rest, a serene site in private meadows with views of open countryside and not much else but the sound of sheep in nearby fields... If all this seems like bliss, this secluded Berwickshire setting is worth seeking out for some solitude – it's well away from traffic and road noise, and has splendid dark skies for fireside stargazing on clear nights. It’s also a fab place to set yourself up for explores in the Scottish Borders, with England mere miles away and the Northumberland tourist town of Berwick-upon-Tweed within 15 minutes' drive for independent shops, supermarkets and sea views from its Elizabethan fortifications. When the tide’s low, stroll from here to Holy Island to see the 11th-century priory, restored castle and upside-down boathouses before supping on a little Lindisfarne Mead. Bikes can be hired in town to take on paths like the Tweed Cycle Way, a long-distance route ending in Biggar, 95 miles away. Closer to home, Foulden is the nearest village (five minutes’ drive), a pretty place of old cottages and an ancient barn overlooking the Cheviot Hills; guests can walk here to see the vistas in half an hour via footpaths straight from the site. Another local village is Ayton, under a 10-minute drive where a continental-inspired café bar organises all sorts of live music, film and comedy shenanigans. If seaside saunters are more your thing, small fishing villages are dotted along the coast, with St Abbs and Coldingham (both under 20 minutes) being some of the prettiest.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked We recently camped 4 days at Shepherd's Rest campsite in Foulden, the location was great, within short driving distance of several towns and beaches. The campsite was lovely, toilets, showers, kitchen and lounge areas provided were clean and lots of handy items provided, microwave and kettle tea, coffee and sugar in the kitchen area, in the lounge freezer for coldpacs and charging points ( came in very handy) also snacks that could be microwaved or hot water added at reasonable prices and a place to hang out in bad weather! Alison and Mark are on site every day taking the goats from shed to field and are very friendly and approachable. We really liked the campsite it was quiet and relaxing and being able to hire fire pit was an added bonus. We would happily come back, maybe even treat ourselves to a stay in one of their Shepherd's huts or large tents !

Disliked Nothing.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked The friendliness of the camp the people and the owners.
It was very clean and well maintained.
Everything there that you'd need such as drying areas for clothes, kitchen with kettle and microwave (there was even coffee, tea and sugar if you'd forgot your own) and hair dryer.
There was an indoor area where you could sit with honesty shop.
Perfect.....

Disliked Nothing to dislike.

Local attractions

Sitting in an area so rich in history, it’s no surprise that this site’s close to several stately structures. Alnwick Castle – that of Harry Potter fame – is a 45-minute drive and has coastal views to take in on the way, while visits to Ford & Etal Estate (25 minutes) get you two castles in one, along with bread baking experiences at the mill (in summer), cuppas in a traditional tea room and visits to horses in an equestrian centre. River paddling’s also popular here in warmer weather and on the way home you can stop off at the Grade I-listed Royal Border Bridge (15 minutes) over the Tweed as dusk falls to see the arches lit up in lots of colours. The Georgian town square and hall of Kelso are a 40-minute drive, along with the abbey and racecourse. And for art, architecture and everything in between? Shepherd’s Rest is an hour and 20 minutes from the cultural hubs of Newcastle and Edinburgh.
