  • Well-maintained site in the grounds of a golf club on the Moray Firth
  • Fochabers 10 minutes’ drive; Glenfiddich Distillery half an hour
  • Access to the golf course; dogs welcome; firepit and picnic tables
What’s not to like about Spey Bay Golf Club? It’s an impeccably maintained site in the grounds of a golf club. More than that: it sits right on the coast of the Moray Firth in northern Scotland. Want to crank this all the way up to 11? This coastline is famed for sightings of bottlenose dolphins. (By the way, if you want to learn more about these watery visitors, head to the WDC Scottish Dolphin Centre, a 10 minutes’ walk away.) In other words, there’s something here for everybody, not just the golf-obsessed in your midst – though they will certainly get a lot out of being on site, with a gorgeous 18-hole course where they can practise their swing and work towards reducing their handicap. Mind you, they might get distracted by the spectacular views of the firth and return home no better at golf than when they left… Meanwhile, non-golfing people might take the dog on a long, energising walk on Spey Bay beach (10 minutes’ walk), scramble up to Binn Hill viewpoint (20 minutes’ drive) for far-reaching coastal views, or take it a bit easier and sample the home-made gin at the bar. The firepit area comes with picnic tables and views of the sea. If you don’t fancy firing up the barbecue – which implies having to source provisions, though that’s easily done at Fochabers (10 minutes) – there’s a restaurant on site.

Powered cement/asphalt travel trailer campsite

Liked Easy to find with excellent facilities and picturesque golf course in the background. Some nice walking and cycling routes nearby.

Disliked Clubhouse closed before we arrived with no response to the club number. Staff member showed up 10 mins later and sorted us out so no big drama. May be worth advertising a mobile number to contact to avoid this type of issue.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked There is a bar, the showers were clean, good camping surface. It is fine for a night or two.

Disliked Bar shut early for a Saturday (9.30pm we returned to campsite that evening). It’s a quiet area and I’m guessing if no patrons they just shut it. There are not a lot of other facilities like cooking area, games room, or tv room, it is no frills, primarily a golf club with camping and a bar as sidelines and if the bar is shut, well so is the pool table and any shelter besides your tent.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Loved area, it's beautiful and good base. Toilets clean and staff friendly shower block open 24/7. Nice small area so not too noisy/busy. Beach is lovely at sunset

Disliked If anything if say it's a exposed location but so is all of Scotland coast lol expect a bit of a drop at beach too. When we went it wasn't an easy climb if you have mobility issues.

Local attractions

Elgin (20 minutes’ drive) is home to the remains of a 13th-century cathedral on the banks of the River Lossie. Next door to the well-preserved ruins is the Biblical Garden, featuring more than 100 plants that are mentioned in the Bible. Meanwhile, the Moray Motor Museum displays a collection of vintage vehicles. The immersive 4D experience at the Speyside Cooperage Visitor Centre (25 minutes) takes you through the various stages of the art of making casks. You can then move on to the viewing gallery to see craftsmen as they create barrels for the whisky industry. Established in 1886, Glenfiddich Distillery (half an hour), on the outskirts of Dufftown, is one of the oldest family-owned distilleries in Scotland. Tours of the facility range from a basic 90-minute introduction to a full four-hour experience, which includes a visit to the cooperage and a guided tasting of single malts.
