  • Small, dog-friendly site in the Southern Uplands of Scotland
  • Access to the nine-mile Meikledale walk; a 45-minute drive to Carlisle
  • River on site for paddling; 10 minutes’ drive from a pub
Longing to stow yourself away in Scotland’s Southern Uplands for a while? You’ll have plenty of time for walking, recharging and other simple pleasures at Bush of Ewes. This dog-friendly site is set in a walkers’ haven, right at the start of the nine-mile Meikledale walk. Other hiking areas in the vicinity include the prehistoric trail at Loch Hill (five minutes’ drive) and the Langholm Hills (10 minutes). Rise and shine, fry an egg over the firepit and then take yourself for a little paddle in the river to really wake yourself up. Birds and other wildlife are frequent visitors at this peaceful site, so keep an eye out as you go along. Facilities on site include two toilets and one shower. You might want to track down a Scottish castle or make your way to Carlisle (45 minutes) for a spot of sightseeing. The Lake District National Park is around an hour’s drive away too, if you fancy a day out by the lakes. The site sits on the A7, so getting about will be easy, and you won’t necessarily have to rely on your car, either, since there’s a bus stop right outside. The 95 bus goes to Langholm village (10 minutes), where there’s a small shop, a fishing lake and a pub/restaurant. Further out, Hawick (25 minutes) has a golf course, leisure centre, shops and local museum, while Canonbie (20 minutes) has a cinema and pretty stretch along the River Esk.

Liked Easy access site. We used as a stopover which was absolutely perfect. It’s a great site with very reasonable prices. Basic facilities but all clean and tidy. Couldn’t really ask for anything else. Having a walk round the small farm was a winner with the little one. Would recommend.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked Lovely site, good location just over the Scottish border. Lovely enclosed dog run for the pooches, plenty of places to take a walk, well maintained lawns, lots of animals to say hi to such as chickens and ducks. I have some mobility issues and asked for a pitch close to the toilet block, the site staff made sure that I was as close as I could be. Site suitable for a wheelchair, walker or sticks.

Disliked 2 toilets and 1 shower for the whole site can get very busy, if we were staying more than a couple of nights I think this would have worn thin at peak times.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked The place is clean and well organized. There is only one shower and two toilets, but even with the number of people during our stay, the facilities were always spotless.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked Location, the price, the animals on the farm, the river for dog swimming, toilets on site. Really nice easy place to stay.

Disliked I couldn't find the river walks, walked along a logging road, not sure where I was going. Walked the opposite way the following day again not sure where to go, the best river part was actually at the site past the animals. Because I was in a van I didn't want to drive to any walks. Still a really great place to go. But I like to do a nice river walk by the river.

Liked Loved the location of this site the surroundings are stunning , the sheepy neighbours were cute the site itself was well payed out

Disliked This is a site I would 100% come back too as long as the loos and showers were revamped
The showers and Loos … I hate to say but men and women sharing facilities doesn’t work …
We stayed in another site yesterday and their showers and loos were communal and also just in sheds but they were immaculate with tiled floors and panelled
The loos and showers at Bush of ewes just need a trim dy up

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your review, glad you enjoyed your stay, the toilets and shower are all recently panelled and do have lino down on the floor, we have only been fully opened since January and have already tidied the toilets and added the shower which where just stone buildings before.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked We had a lovely 2 night stay here. Pitch was big enough to fit our 8 man tent with porch and our car.
The campsite has great facilities for dogs which includes an exercise area! Great for us with an active dog!
The walk through the field with all of the animals was lovely. We loved saying hello to the working dog in his pen!
The river is a great addition to the campsite. Again, the dog loved it!
Facilities always spotless and regularly cleaned. Can’t complain!

Disliked Bring extra tent pegs! We binned most of ours at the end of our stay due to the ground being very stoney.

From the manager: Thank you for your review sorry to read you would not stay again, but as you have not put what you disliked unfortunately we cannot change anything. We can't control the weather and you also stayed on one of the 2 super pitches which is double the size of all the other pitches as you said you did not recieve your original pitch number, and did not want to wind your caravan legs back up when I approached you to tell you your correct pitch number. Again I apologise you did not have a good stay.

Local attractions

The city of Carlisle (45 minutes’ drive) has a well-preserved castle that must have seen some serious action during its centuries-old life in this border city. Other attractions include a stretch of Hadrian’s Wall and a medieval cathedral. After all that sightseeing, take a rest in one of several green areas along the River Eden. For outdoor activities such as watersports, cycling and horseriding, you can make a beeline for Kielder Water and Forest Park (50 minutes). There are also wooded walks, plus stargazing events organised by Kielder Observatory and birdwatching (ospreys nest here). At the Solway Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (about an hour), you can admire the mudflats in the Inner Solway Firth, stretch out on the sand dunes at Mawbray Banks or check out the boggy pools at Drumburgh Moss, which are visited by curlews, geese and skylarks, depending on the time of year.
