  • Peaceful, dog-friendly Ayrshire smallholding site among woodlands
  • Dumfries House 10 minutes’ drive; Glasgow one hour
  • Resident horses; next to a stream and two miles from the River Ayr Way
Privacy, peacefulness and ponies – sounds like a top holiday, right? And you can have all three Ps at Hillend Camping and Motorhome Aire, a pop-up site on a smallholding and livery stables in rural Ayrshire, about half an hour’s drive south of Kilmarnock. The pitches are spacious and unmarked here, so feel free to pick your own spot. Hillend is in a very private setting and encircled by peaceful woodlands, but it’s still within easy reach of local towns and villages. It is roughly a mile and a half to Auchinleck, where there is a railway station, convenience store, pub, butcher’s and café. The Dippol Burn stream, where kids and dogs can cool off, meanders through the site, and the gorgeous River Ayr Way walk is roughly two miles north of base. Badgers, hedgehogs, deer, foxes, owls and otters can sometimes be spotted in the local area, so keep your eyes peeled when exploring local woodlands and riverbanks. And as the site is part of a working farm, you may also see horses and ponies grazing in nearby fields, too, of course. This site is all about getting back to nature and relaxing in a secluded family-friendly space. Off-ground firepits and barbecues are permitted. Please note that there is no chemical waste point on site.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked I really enjoyed my stay at Hillend Camping and Motorhome Aire. The site is set in a beautiful, very rural location with lots of open space and woodland walks, which made it perfect for both me and my dog. The facilities were clean and well maintained, and I appreciated the peaceful countryside atmosphere.

The hosts were friendly and welcoming, and the site felt safe and dog-friendly. My dog loved the space to explore, and it was easy to get out into nature straight from the pitches.

Disliked The only downside was that a few other campers were quite loud at times, but this was absolutely not the fault of the hosts, who keep the site very well run.

Liked Shower was nice and thay was relaxed on were abouts you parked told you were it might be a bit wet to drive as thay had heavy rain

Disliked Only one dislike but not a problem no hot water to wash up with just boil kettle and take with you to wash up if you wanted hot water to wash with

From the manager: Thanks for your review, we’re glad you enjoyed the showers and our relaxed pitch approach.
We’re a simple, back to basics campsite with clean but basic facilities, so we’re a little puzzled by the low score of 6/10 when your written comments were very positive and as your only ‘dislike’ was a small point about washing-up water, which you said wasn’t really a problem?
Hopefully, we can welcome you back in the future.
Best wishes

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked We liked the location, even though we felt like we were very remote, there was a large Tesco and local village a 6 minute drive away. It has very calm, quiet and beautiful surroundings. We felt very central for getting out and exploring the coastline and castle ruins, which were all about a 40 minute drive away.
There was plenty of room for my boys to kick a football around. The toilets and shower were very clean. Lauren and her mum were very friendly and checked in with us to make sure everything was OK when they saw us.
Good mobile phone and Internet reception if you need it.

Liked The shower facilities felt safe and were clean. You have the whole room to get ready in so your clothes don’t get wet. The campsite was beautiful. There were fire pits that were available for use. All round a great campsite! 🏕️

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked What an amazing holiday we had, we were very nervous about the storm, but decided to brave it. We survived it and so did our tent. When the storm passed at 4am, we felt amazing like different people. Honestly I don’t know how to explain it, but it felt good, like we had ticked something off our bucket lists.
We had the site all to ourselves for almost 3 nights. It’s a beautiful place, so peaceful. I give it a whole 10 star rating and we will definitely visit again.
Thank you so much for letting us stay for 5 days.

Primitive cement/asphalt RV campsite

Liked We only picked this site to get inland & hunker down from storm floris, but what a beautiful little site, pefectly clean toilets & shower, place to get drinking water, even though it was a windy day we just sat & watched the horses in the fields

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your review, we're really glad you found the site beautiful, enjoyed the peaceful surroundings, and appreciated the clean facilities and views of the horses. It sounds like you had a pleasant and restful stay, even with Storm Floris passing through!

That’s why we were a little surprised by the 5/10 rating, as your positive comments don’t seem to reflect such a low score. Either way, we appreciate you choosing to stay with us and hope to welcome you back in better weather.
Best wishes
