  • Dog-friendly caravan park 15 minutes’ drive from lively Ayr
  • Royal Troon Golf Club 20 minutes’ drive; Culzean Castle 25 minutes
  • Woodland walks from the pitches; shops and pubs 15 minutes’ walk away
If you’re after a spot to park up for the night, or are looking to stick around and explore stunning Ayrshire, you’ve hit upon the right place. Garton Caravan Park is a traditional site with tree-sheltered pitches set in countryside just 15 minutes’ drive from Ayr along the A70, so you may hear the hum of traffic during the day. There are woodland walks surrounding the pitches for exercising yourselves (and any furry companions of course), but if you’d rather have a stroll with a purpose attached to it, the renowned links course at Royal Troon Golf Club is 20 minutes’ drive away. Coylton village (five minutes’ drive/15 minutes’ walk) has handy shops, cafés, takeaways and pubs, while lively Ayr is a sure-fire bet for picking up food or any other bits and bobs you’ve left at home. If you’re having a break from the stove, take your pick of cosy pubs, organic cafés and restaurants serving local Scottish produce while you’re there. If the weather is behaving, there’s a sandy beach too – it’s backed by Pirate Pete’s Scotland amusement arcade for days when the sun refuses to appear.

Liked: My wife actually saw a deer at the boundary of the campsite.

Disliked: The signage at the entrance is poor, we overshot and had to turn around and go back. Nobody was on site, the house near the entrance is unoccupied. The entire campsite was deserted. Had to ring the site owner to find out what to do and he told us we could choose any empty pitch. We only found one pitch that was roughly level and settled in.
The toilets had obviously not been cleaned or inspected for some time and previous visitors had left them in a mess. The toilet had stagnant water pooled on the floor behind the toilet from what appeared to be a leak.
As night set in it became apparent that traffic noise from the road was a big problem (we stayed on a Saturday night so possibly traffic is heavier on this night). Coupled with the high pitch of traffic passing by there was the low pitch sound of commercial aeroplanes taking off/landing from the nearby airport and it appears the site is on a busy flight path. Halfway through the night we heard a car pull up doors slamming and people shouting which was quite disturbing whether this was on the site or by the nearby road was difficult to discern. Needless to say we did not have a good night's sleep.
The whole site gave the impression of being a work in progress with various hand tools scattered around.
We were sorry to say that we could find no redeeming features and having stayed on various Aires and sites in Scotland were extremely disappointed both by the state of the site and the amount charged which did not represent good value for money considering the lack of wifi, noise and state of the facilities.
We cannot recommend this site even as a one night stopover.

Liked: Nothing to like here.

Disliked: On entering the park we were met by no one whatsoever to tell us where to park or anything about the amenities. I was in the only Motorhome alert from 2 caravans whereas one was occupied by a 85 yr old blocked that’s in there all season he tells me whilst his dog is having a good shit behind our vehicle. The road noise is unbearable even through the night it’s still going on - couldn’t find a level pitch as your were either tipping over from one side to the other or the back of the van was half a foot higher than the front. Toilets and shower were a disgrace. Reading the reviews some say one night is more than enough- I say I’ll never go back even after one night.

Liked: Very very friendly and helpful people at the site. If you get early, you pick the pitch. Not busy, no screaming kids. 3 toilets, 2 with showers that were spotless, the 3rd toilet was full of wildlife, brilliant. An easy 15 min walk to the village with plenty of shops and a pub. Barbecues allowed. Bus service into Ayr.

Disliked: Tight entrance to site and not well marked. Unlevel and muddy pitches. The decent pitches were shaded by trees and therefore got no sun.
Pricey for what you are getting.

Liked: Small site located 3 miles east of Ayr and ideally located for our visit to the International Air Show. Pitches are small and are not level. The main road can be busy at times and traffic noise can be heard but this did not bother us. Staff were very friendly and helpful. There is no light pollution around the sight so ideal for star gazing.

Disliked: Small sign at the entrance could be mistaken for a house for sale sign and not a caravan park. I had read the reviews before arriving so knew what to look out for. Quite a steep incline to the site and to get to the pitches with your caravan.
Pitches need tidying up, cans, tea bags and burned wood left from previous guests and weeds removed. We decided not to use the site facilities as the reviews were poor so I am unable to comment. With a bit more tlc this has the potential to be a super small site.

Liked: This site is good for a one night stay.

The road is quite close to the site and is quite noisy if you are sitting outside, it didn't disturb our sleep though.

Disliked: The price is a bit steep for what facilities are offered.

There is only one toilet and shower for the whole site which meant we had to wait most times to use the facilities and the washing up area reminds me a bit of scout camp - a porter cabin with one sink and quite a few spiders.

There were no instructions sent or on site on how to check in and I had to go and ask one of the other guests what to do as it wasn't clear where to park or what pitch we should have been on.

I understand that this site is having work done to it, but I think until these are completed you should rethink the price of the pitches.

Liked: This site is good for one night stop overs but not longer. It’s small and basic and a little steep in price comparison to other sites of a similar profile. There is one toilet with a shower inside, it was clean but if it’s occupied and you need the loo - you’re in for a wait. It would have been nice to be greeted by someone on arrival but I appreciate we checked in at 8pm.
The forest surroundings and nice and the location for Ayr is good!

Disliked: Lack of toilets

There is a road nearby, but it fades after settling in.

Disliked: We were meant to be staying at Garton Caravan Park on the 17th but chose to leave shortly after arrival due to the following reasons.

We initially struggled to find the park due to the lack of signs and had to pass by numerous times. Once we found the park we couldn’t find anywhere to check in or anyone to speak to regarding our booking and the camps facilities etc.

We chose a plot which had the least camber but our van was still not level. This, along with the loud traffic noise, would’ve impacted our sleep.

The toilet and shower facilities lacked amenities. There was no toilet roll in either cabin or anywhere to dry our hands.

I understand the park was recently taken over, however, I do not believe our stay would’ve been worth £30 even if we stayed.

Owner said we would be refunded minus our booking fee but has not sent the money
