  • Friendly and scenic basic site between Bristol and Bath
  • Edged by the 13-mile car-free Bristol and Bath Railway Path
  • Stroll along the banks of the Avon to local pubs serving food
Bed down between Bristol and Bath (half an hour's drive from each) at The Stables, a relaxed site where guests can unwind in the outdoors or get out on trips to two of southwest England’s most stellar cities and their scenic surroundings. This simple site set on 10 green acres of land – some of which hosts a herd of alpacas – is close to walking trails, including the 13-mile Bristol and Bath Railway Path, which runs alongside the end of the pitching field. The car-free route between these cities follows the River Avon and passes by pubs serving food and drinks with views out over the water. Wild swimming is also possible at certain spots en route (just make sure to sip on a Somerset cider after rather than before your dip…). A sports and social club is behind the site for more drinks, and shops are in Keynsham, along the local bus route (a five-minute drive away). The main top spots to sightsee are in Bath and Bristol – don’t miss the former’s Roman architecture and the latter’s graffiti art – but other excellent places are within driving distance too, like the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (20 minutes) and Cheddar Gorge in the Mendip Hills (40 minutes). All questions on where to roam are welcome at the park: the owners are laidback and friendly, wanting guests to really get to know this pretty area. The site's facilities are basic (it’s got four portable toilets, drinking water and chemical disposal), which is reflected in the budget-friendly pitch price, and it welcomes well-behaved dogs as long as they're kept on leads around the grounds.

Primitive grass travel trailer campsite

Liked Very peaceful, spacious and reasonably priced. Only 4 chemical toilets but they were clean and well supplied. Lovely view of countryside around the field and convenient for lots of walks along canal/river paths and Bristol to Bath path. Easy walk to a number of good pubs. Particularly liked the Lock Keeper - good food and reasonably priced. Campsite well cared for and owners very friendly. Will definitely be returning!

Primitive grass travel trailer campsite

Liked Great location with loads of space. I needed some place to park for the night as I had a training course in Bristol a dn doing the drive from home and back plus the training day would just be to long a day for me and the stables were the idea solution for me. Would.like to go back for a short break next time.

Primitive grass travel trailer campsite

Liked Lovely peaceful little site, lady who ran it was very accommodation when a family member dropped by. Nice spacious layout with plenty of room

Disliked Not so much a dislike as an observation, toilets at the bottom of the field would be great because its quite a walk if you wake up in the night needing the loo

Primitive grass tent campsite (backpacker, solo, no cars)

Liked Brilliant campsite, really enjoyed my stay. Location is great, facilities are well maintained and there is plenty of room. I will absolutely be coming back.

The Premier is a short walk away and has any last minute things you might need. I would also recommend a stop in The White Hart for a pint. Short walk to the river is also very pleasant.

Local attractions

Head half a mile to the Avon Valley Railway for heritage train rides leaving from Bitton and running alongside the River Avon or drive to Kelston Park (10 minutes' drive) and meander around this manor house and its 75-acre grounds. The Avon Valley Adventure Wildlife Park (15 minutes) is a prime pick for combining ambles with animal attractions – this kid-friendly spot is a farm and petting zoo with a playground, small train, go-karts and riverside roams. If your watery walks here have you itching to brave bigger trails, join the Monarch’s Way long-distance route, running 615 miles from Worcester to Brighton, from Bristol (25 minutes). Make sure to check out Cheddar Gorge (40 minutes) on wanders from the park as well and seek out subterranean spots to explore like the family-friendly Wookey Hole cave (40 minutes).
