  • Nearly-wild camping on an organic farm with spectacular views
  • Within the Quantock Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty
  • Pick your own pitch; barbecues permitted on site
Cothelstone Estate is a quiet site in peaceful surroundings in an elevated spot within the Quantock Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, with far-reaching views over the local landscape and easy access to walking and mountain biking trails. Located within an area of outstanding natural beauty, it's also within about a 20-minute drive of Exmoor National Park and the west Somerset coast. This family-friendly campsite is located between Lydeard Hill and Cothelstone Hill, with off-road trails to get you to both. These spots are great gateways to the wider Quantocks area, which has over 7,000 acres of open access land to explore – bring your walking boots along to get out onto the scenic trails around the site. The nearest sizeable village is West Bagborough, roughly a mile away, while nearby Bishop's Lydeard (10 minutes' drive) has two pubs, a brewery, a Chinese takeaway, tea rooms, a farm shop and a supermarket. Barbecues are welcome at Cothelstone Estate, but to protect the grass they need to be well raised off the ground at all times. The site's staff can also supply guests with a small number of barbecues for a small fee if you haven't brought your own (the cost includes locally-burnt charcoal).

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: We all loved the peace and quiet, no internet was lovely! The children let off lots of steam running around, bug hunting and exploring. No light pollution at night let us watch the stars. The toilets were nice and clean with very clear instructions for those who hadn't used compost toilets before.

Disliked: Only one small thing, the steps to the toilets were quite slippery when wet so maybe some anti slip of some kind on there.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Amazing views, simple, peaceful.
Good communication from hosts.

Disliked: Ground looked like it had been planted with a herbal ley. Great for the soil but coarse and prickly underfoot and to sit on. Bring a mat or chair and keep shoes on.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Secluded, beautiful views, lovely wild flower and tree lines, walks near by, compost loos, minimal other campers, helpful friendly message from owners (exact coordinates meant not getting lost)

Disliked: Ground tricky for pegs but not impossible! Lock fiddly and changed the code of by accident when it swung round (but managed to change it back!)
