  • Back to basics pop-up site on a working sheep farm
  • A five-minute drive from the Quantock Hills; surrounded by trails
  • Pub 10 minutes’ walk away; barbecues and firepits welcome on site
This gorgeous meadow with views of the Quantock Hills and Charlinch village has been much-loved by generations of grazing sheep. For over a hundred years, the meadow has been farmed by the family for the sheep’s home or used to make hay. Now, it has a new lease of life as Charlynch Meadow Camping, a pop-up off-grid site… This place should very quickly get the stamp of approval from budding and keen hikers, as it is just one and a half miles from the edge of the Quantock Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. There’s fab access to footpaths through the countryside (so, pack your jam sandwiches and whatnot, and get walking pronto…). The family will be pleased to point you in the right direction, whether ambitious routes are in order, or the local pubs are your target rather than a pre-packed picnic assortment. The nearest pub is in Four Forks village, 10 minutes’ walk away. If you’re after local produce for your sandwich fillings or barbecues and firepits (which are permitted on site), there’s a farm shop 35 minutes’ walk away. For getting further afield in Somerset, Junction 23 and Junction 24 on the M5 are just 20 minutes’ drive away. Of course, the Somerset coast might be one of the first spots you call upon… the seaside towns of Minehead and Weston-super-Mare are 45 minutes’ drive away and Burnham on Sea is half an hour’s drive away. Rockpooling and foraging for fossils can provide hours of entertainment on Kilve Beach, 25 minutes’ drive away, too.

Primitive grass campervan campsite

Liked This is a beautiful quiet pop up with lots of space. The gate access was plenty wide enough from the country lane, no need for chocks as flat, and grass short. I used a breatheable ground sheet to cut down bugs. There are 3 ways to access the field, I came from Cannington Road and the lane was single and narrow with lovely trimmed hedgerows, so large campervan was ok. Met one car and had few passing places.
Chose another route back to J23 via Spaxton Road where the road was much wider, more traffic but much easier.
On arrival we were in 34 degree heatwave, so initially the water tap/waterpipe was very hot(due to extreme hot weather) Rachel and her girls kindly brought us some cool water for drinking from their house. Amazing and very gratefully received on such an hot day After flushing the tap the water ran cold and was able to top up van. The porta loo was clean and there was a little box next to it we used for recycling cans (hope that’s what is was for!) you need to take your own rubbish home which is expected in such a quiet place. 5G reception was poor and little TV signal but who needs that when you have the skies to look at!
We were hoping for shooting stars but the moon was too bright. We did see a few which were amazing! The hosts came around the next morning and were extremely friendly and welcoming. Walked to a little reservoir and as it’s private, no swimming allowed. Would recommend this place wholeheartedly. The booking was simple and last minute. A friendly text before you arrive. Relaxed leaving time although we left by about 11am. Hope you carry on next year, my sister and I will definitely be back. Thank you

Disliked Having to leave!

Primitive grass campervan campsite

Liked Informal pop up site, no designated pitches, minimal facilites on site ( portaloo and drinking water only, as expected) Hosts were very accomodating (and Libby stepping in to do the meet and greet !) Situated in a lovely quiet location, didn't get a chance to try the local pub, but it was literally 5 mins walk from the site. Good dog walking around very quiet lanes 👍👌

Primitive grass campervan campsite

Liked Set in beautiful peaceful countryside with walks right beside campsite, but easy to reach from Bridgewater and M5
Less than an hour's drive to Holnicott Estate (NT) Kilve, Watchet etc.
Lots of space in the field. Flat field, bordered with hedges and fences all round, so we didn't have to worry about the dog 'escaping'.
Very clean well maintained portaloo + basin, well stocked with loo paper and soap.
Helpful and friendly owners
Beautiful sunset!
A hidden gem - we will definitely return.

Primitive grass campervan campsite

Liked We booked a very last minute stay here over the Bank Holiday weekend and ended up staying a second night as it was a gem of a find. It’s perfectly simple - nice field, clean portaloo and a tap with drinking water. Really peaceful location but also not far from civilisation! Rachel and Dan were great hosts too. We would definitely return if staying in the area again, and fully recommend!

Local attractions

Getting your outdoors fix is easy as can be… the WWT Steart Marshes (15 minutes’ drive), which are frequented by seabirds are one spot, and Exmoor National Park (35 minutes) is another, with miles and miles of moorland trails. Doniford Farm Park (25 minutes) is another jolly good spot, especially for families, as it has animals, play areas and a café. The Walled Gardens of Cannington Tea Room (10 minutes) has a tearoom and plant shop, but adults can also ditch the coffee and indulge a little in the dry white wines of Oatley Vineyard (five minutes) if they so wish. Somewhat of a historian? Then, you may want to visit scientist and poet Andrew Crosse’s former home Fyne Court Cottage (15 minutes) or the former home of poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Coleridge Cottage (10 minutes).
