  • Farm shop serving food and pub with garden within 1-2 minutes' stroll
  • Well-spaced pitches and spotless facilities
What a spectacularly well set site this is… do try your best to settle in for quite some time… Portesham Dairy Farm Camp Site is in peaceful Dorset countryside on the Jurassic Coast (week one of your hol) and easily accessible to Weymouth, Dorchester and the Dorset beaches: that should cover weeks two and three… Your eats and drinks are excellently sorted from here too, as a farm shop with café is a minute's amble from the site, and the owners' local, the King's Arms, is within a couple of minutes' stroll. The site is on the edge of the village of Portesham, in the Dorset Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and 15 minutes' drive from Weymouth. It's family run with a dedicated team that takes pride in its modern clean amenities: the purpose-built facilities block comes with toilets, showers, basins, hairdryers and hand dryers, baby changing area and an enclosed washing-up space with hot and cold water. There's also a laundry room (with drinks machine and tourist info), as well as three chemical disposal points across the site. A small play area is to hand for kids. The site welcomes quiet and friendly dogs; a footpath leads from the farm across fields and countryside.

Powered cement/asphalt travel trailer campsite (semi-serviced, small)

Liked: Met on arrival by a cheerful lady on reception ( sorry didn’t catch her name ) who welcomed us to the site, gave us a booklet for the site with vital information. Sadly we forgot our dog leads, the lady bent over backwards to help us find a spare lead to tide us over till we could get to the shops the next day!

The site was beautiful, very well laid out, toilet facilities were spotless along with the dishwashing facilities plus the additional bonus of WiFi.

The site was spotless! We enjoyed it so much we wanted to extend our stay but sadly due to work commitments had to return home.

Dog walking field was easily accessible, again very clean with a bin on exit/arrival.

The vending machines, what a brilliant idea, selection of fresh milk/shakes hot coffee, a vending machine for essentials ie Bread, freshly squeezed Orange Juice Machine and Ice Cream!

Perfect position for getting around, approx 15 minute drive to Weymouth.

We would highly recommend this site and will be returning here again whenever we visit South Dorset.

Powered cement/asphalt travel trailer campsite (medium, semi-serviced)

Liked: The facilities were close by, and regularly attended. The convenience and safety aspect of automatic car reg barriers for on site off site entry & exit. The location was nearby the shops and lots of attractions.

Disliked: The site feels a bit unfriendly being so close to neighbours, as it was packed in, this made manoeuvring and relaxing a little tricky.

From the manager: Thank you for your review and glad you thought it was a nice spot to stay - sorry to hear you felt a bit close to your neighbours. The pitches are appropriately spaced and Easter weekend is a busy time of year for us. Glad to see that you would visit again, if you favour a particular area of the campsite please let us know when rebooking and we will be happy to accommodate.

Primitive grass tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite (small)

Liked: The campsite is very clean and secure. The toilets, kitchen, and showers were immaculate and really impressed my fussy wife. The internet was reasonable fast at 45 Mbps; suitable to stream Netflix. The size of the plots are very generous and nicely groomed. During the second evening some kids started to play football nearby and they were shut down very quickly.

Disliked: Nothing

Local attractions

However long you stay here (at least a couple of weeks, preferably), there's enough to see and do around Dorset to entertain all ages and tastes. Ditch the car if you prefer: the local bus stop is 150 yards from the farm entrance, to pick up the Jurassic Coast route bus (X53) running from Exeter to Poole. The Portesham Dairy Farm team recommends a climb up to the Hardy Monument on Black Down (five minutes' drive) as a nifty way to see Dorset and its splendid coastline (the monument isn't to the writer Thomas Hardy as you might expect in these parts, but to Vice Admiral Thomas Hardy, a commander at the Battle of Trafalgar; do be sure to tell that to the kids). You should be able to see the Devon coast, the Mendip Hills and the Isle of Wight from here on a clear day; just clamber the 120 steps up to the viewpoint. Also much recommended is Abbotsbury, home of the famed swannery as well as subtropical gardens and a kids' farm (also five minutes' drive), and the golden sands, sand sculptures and fair rides of Weymouth, 15 minutes from the farm. Portland (25 minutes) is also a must: visit the lighthouse, forage for fossils and come down the hill from the top of town for stunning views of the coast and Chesil Beach.
