  • Simple family-run site on a smallholding at Buckland Newton in Dorset
  • Cerne Giant 10 minutes’ drive and Weymouth beaches 35 minutes
  • Pitch up anywhere; livestock encounters available; dog walks from site
Dorset bound and looking for a peaceful rural hideaway away from the crowds? Try booking in at Lanscombe Lane Camping, a no-frills family-run site on a smallholding with woodland views and easy access to Weymouth beaches (35 minutes’ drive). You can look forward to pretty countryside views, waking up to birdsong and embracing long walks – many somehow seem to end up at local pubs. Dogs are welcome by the way, and you can keep their exercise regime up with scenic countryside strolls from your pitch; they can also accompany you to the pub in Buckland Newton (20 minutes’ walk), where you can get a decent pint of Dorset cider. And if the kids (or indeed you) would like to meet the resident goats, sheep and hens (fresh eggs are often available for breakfast fry-ups), please ask the site owners. Simple facilities on site include a fresh water tap, waste disposal facilities and plenty of space to stretch out and relax – the well-kept camping fields have no designated pitches so you can set up wherever you fancy. The owners kindly ask that you respect the land as it’s on a working smallholding; make the most of your stay but leave no trace. Please leave the site as you found – and that includes only having campfires and barbecues that are off the ground so the grass doesn’t get damaged.

Primitive grass and earth tent or RV campsite

Liked Small site but it felt big with all the open space. Gemma the owner was super lovely, very chatty and made us feel very welcome. She recommended sooner local pubs and walks for us, and let us spend some time with her goats which was super cool. Had an amazing time and I highly recommend this site

The goats were delightful.

Primitive grass and earth tent or RV campsite

Liked Small and quiet place.Clean toilets, you can feed goats in the morning. Badger watch attraction in a walking distance but way too overpriced - £80 for up to 4 people.

Disliked Whole field is a slope so not many flat / horizontal spots for tents. All is fenced and unable to step out to see the wild without going around through the entrance. Worst part is that livestock is a part of camping field with electric fence thus you are in position to traumatized your kids seeing attemt to shot your puppy / dog if ends up getting inside sheep field. You need to keep your dog on leash or trained to resist chase. No info was mentioned about this on website ad. Owners left impression of double faced attitude. Very mean and sweet depending on circumstances.

From the manager: Dear Lenny
Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. We’re pleased you enjoyed the peaceful setting, clean facilities, and the chance to feed our goats, they’re a highlight for many of our guests.
We’re sorry to hear that other aspects of your stay didn’t meet expectations. While the field does have a natural slope, we offer several flatter areas specifically designated for pitching tents, and we’re always happy to help guests find the best spot on arrival.
Regarding fencing and access to nature, our boundaries are in place to protect both guests and livestock. There are beautiful walking routes and wildlife areas nearby, and we’re happy to recommend the best ways to explore them.
We must address a serious concern from your visit. Your dog entered the livestock area and attacked our animals, which was extremely distressing and unacceptable. This is precisely why our terms and conditions clearly state that dogs must be kept on a lead and supervised at all times for their own safety, the protection of our animals, and out of respect for other guests. Despite reminders, this rule was not followed, and we received complaints from other visitors who were upset by the incident.
Following the event, I made a sincere effort to ensure your children still had a positive experience during their stay. I made an extra special efforts and offered them personal time with our animals, including brushing and interacting with them in a calm, supervised setting, not only to bring some joy to their visit, but also to help them better understand and appreciate animal behaviour and welfare.
We’re reviewing our signage and booking information to make our dog policy even more visible and unambiguous going forward.
Lastly, we’re sorry if any interactions with us felt inconsistent. We aim to treat every guest with warmth and respect, and we regret if our communication came across differently.
Your feedback is noted.

It’s a basic site but the location more than makes up for it! Great👍

Liked Gemma was an excellent host. Shortly after we pitched up, she came over to greet us and even took my children to collect fresh eggs from the hens—a real highlight for them! The field was very clean, well kept, and set in such a tranquil spot. We loved our stay and would happily return.

Disliked There was nothing to dislike.

Primitive grass and earth tent or RV campsite

Liked Fantastic few days at this campsite. Gemma is a fantastic host and makes you feel very welcomed!
We were introduced to the goats and the chickens both were lovely and we were allowed to go in and out of the goat field to see the goats as we pleased - even to sit with a coffee and have some cuddles!
Beautifully quiet and peaceful, the portaloos were spotless and well stocked with toilet rolls. There is also a drinking water tap located at the front of the field too so everything is in easy distance.
We will definitely be returning ☺️

Primitive grass and earth tent or RV campsite

Liked Located in a very rural, peaceful(heard no traffic) and scenic area. If you love walking like I do this is a great spot, I walked to the cerne abbas giant using the quite roads and Bridleways from here.
The family who run it were wonderful and friendly and went out of the way to take me to the goats enclosure who were as friendly as the hosts.
Clean toilets, water refill, logs and eggs.
If it's peace and quite you want to immerse yourself in then this is the place, with a nice country pub a short walk away if you want.
And great value for money.

Disliked Nothing...
This is a new work in progress site, what they offered and what it said on the tin is what you got and more.

Liked Gemma the owner of the pitch was extremely welcoming, there were goats who were absolutely adorable she allowed us to go in the pen with them for a cuddle, there were also sheep and chickens in which she let my kids collect the eggs and pet the chickens. The area has stunning views and is lovely and peaceful. Two portaloos onsite beautifully clean, fresh water available, logs and eggs for sale. Fire pits for hire. Easy to use QR code on arrival to pay for your stay. 100% recommend I’ll be back!
