  • A 150-metre stroll from a beach for sea angling and fossil hunting
  • Fishing lake, play area and shop on site
Want to feel on top of the world? Travel down to Dorset and Golden Cap, the highest point on the south coast of England and part of a 2000-acre National Trust estate. Golden Cap Holiday Park is the most cap-tastic place to take all this in, as it’s surrounded by peaceful Dorset countryside and part of the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site. And, as should be expected in Dorset, it’s right next to the water – in the seaside village of Seatown and 150 metres from a shingle beach known for its sea angling and fossil hunting. Facilities at the park are excellent – there are two big modern shower/toilet blocks, a launderette and a well-stocked shop. Wifi is available across the whole park priced from an hour to a season – just buy a ticket online. Guests can also pay to use the leisure facilities at the other West Dorset Leisure Holiday Park in the area, Highlands End Holiday Park which has a sauna/steam room and a heated indoor pool. And if you just can’t bring yourself to walk that 150 metres for some beach fishing, you can take it easy instead at Golden Cap’s own fishing lake.

FHU cement/asphalt travel trailer campsite

Liked: The campsite was in a great location, right by the beach with stunning coastal walks along the seafront. The hardstanding pitches were great. Facilities were good and clean. We visited Highlands End campsite too and Martins restaurant and shop there were excellent.

Disliked: The weather was terrible!
The road down to the campsite is narrow and a bit stressful with a bigger van although there are passing places along the way.

Liked: Almost level, concrete hard standing,+ gravel and grass. Pitch2.
Excellent, clean loo block, but only 2 w.c.s, and 2 showers. Not a problem early February. Very quiet. Close to beach, coastal path and excellent pub.Helpful and friendly maintenance staff.

Disliked: Reception and shop closed for the duration of my stay. No one to offer advice and local knowledge. No information cabin, book and video swap.

From the manager: Thank you for the fab review, we are pleased that you found the facilities clean and the pitch level.
Our reception is not always open in January and February but we always have someone in the Spar shop who can assist you with any enquiries, the opening hours may be shorter out of season.

Liked: Shower block was excellent, warm and clean.
Close to beach and coastal path.

Disliked: Pitch was slightly too small for camper and awning.
Shop was closed.

From the manager: Thank you for your review and feedback Ian, much appreciated.
The pitches accommodate vehicles up to 9.5m plus an awning, we are very surprised if you didnt have sufficient space for a 6m vehicle.
Our wardens are always on hand to help you if you have any queries on how to pitch for next time!

Would definitely stay again and bring the family.

Local attractions

Start at Stonebarrow Hill for 25 miles’ worth of walking trails around Golden Cap, making sure to pause after you puff uphill for the views across Lyme Bay to Dartmoor. There’s a National Trust information point, shops and toilets in an old radar station on the hill to make a pitstop at before taking the trail through Langdon Hill Wood, taking the Smugglers’ Trail, or clambering cliffwards to see the ancient Thorncombe Beacon and views to Bridport and Chesil Beach, one of the biggest shingle stretches in the country. A walk east from the beacon will take you to the seaside village and coastal views of Eype, or you can wander west to the beach at Charmouth for more fossil hunting. Other recommended day trips from Golden Cap are Lyme Regis with crazy golf on top of the promenade, the fishing village of Beer which can be combined with a trip to Seaton or Sidmouth, and the miles of sandy beach at West Bay with boat trips. If you have little animal enthusiasts along on your trip, take them to hand-feed the 600 swans at Abbotsbury Swannery, or to get nautical at Weymouth Sea Life Park. For more grownup west Dorset attractions try Forde Abbey, Sherborne Castle or the Haynes Motor Museum… the kids might not mind these too much if you then take them to Dorchester’s award-winning Dinosaur Museum.
