The site is in an oak woodland
Every pitch has a dedicated firepit area

  • Wild-style camping on a 16-acre Devon woodland site near Denbury
  • A 10-minute drive to Dartmoor National Park; 25 minutes to Paignton
  • Peaceful and private landscaped pitches among mature oak trees
The brains behind Barhams Woodland Camping have previously been responsible for one of Europe’s top hostels for outdoor lovers, so you can be sure they’ve got a pretty good idea of what makes a good base for an outdoor break. At this Devon site they describe the setup as ‘wild camping – with one or two of the rough edges taken away’. And that’s a great way to describe this place, set among 16 acres of woodland a mile from Denbury. It’s a laidback place that’s all about appreciating things like peaceful campfire evenings, fresh air and birdsong – but it’s also got flushing toilets, gas-powered showers and a washing-up area to make life a little more comfortable. Each of the pitches here has been thoughtfully landscaped to make the most of the setting and provide plenty of privacy. That means they’ve all got their own individual character – but what they’ve got in common is a setting under the canopy of tall oak trees that have been in place for more than a hundred years. That canopy can be handy for sheltering you from passing rain showers, but there are also enough gaps between the branches to make sure some sunlight breaks through. In another handy little touch, the car park has been set up to provide an allocated space for each pitch – a useful feature for peace of mind that you’ll always find a space. The south Devon surroundings are just as fine here, too – the edge of Dartmoor National Park is about 10 minutes’ drive and the coast about 25 minutes, so you’ll have plenty of choice when it comes to walking trails, outdoor activities and family attractions.

Primitive forest floor tent campsite (four person)

Liked Magical campsite that strikes just the right balance between ‘wild’ and creature comforts. All facilities extremely clean, which is impressive considering the toilets and showers are essentially (very nice) outhouses! Staff embodied the light-touch philosophy but were super friendly when I saw them around camp a couple of times. This was my first solo camp and I felt very safe here. Will definitely be back.

Primitive forest floor tent campsite (six person)

Liked Woodland camping! When I go camping it's usually in a field so this felt unique and very much like wild camping. Felt like I was far away from civilisation as well which felt good, even though denbury and newton abbot weren't far away. Showers, toilets and sinks all very nice. Good communication with the owners

Disliked I can't think of anything i disliked about this place. It's basic but it's supposed to be and not a bad thing at all

A peaceful woodland site, well run and set up, with lovely people

Primitive cement/asphalt campervan campsite (maximum 6 metres)

Liked The peaceful setting and small size.

The set up of the site.

The powerful showers.

The friendly people.

Disliked The fact the lovely toilets weren’t available this week, but that was due to heavy rainfall last week and couldn’t be helped. The temporary portaloos were kept as clean as possible.

Had a great stay in 2 of the campervan pitches. Great firepits.

Primitive forest floor tent campsite (six person)

Liked The perfect site for a wild camping experience with the added comforts of showers, toilets and drinking water. The pitches are excellently spaced and provide a sense of privacy you don't often get on other camp sites. Each pitch had its own fire pit which was a lovely touch and the site provides wheelbarrows for transporting your equipment etc easily from the car park. Lisa and John were very welcoming which made all the difference. Already planning our next stay!

Primitive forest floor tent campsite (six person)

Liked By far our FAVOURITE campsite ever. It's absolutely stunning. So much space. It has a perfect balance of wild camping vibes while feeling safe as well as having access to essential facilities, and the use of a cute firepit area on each pitch too.

I feel so relaxed there. Knowing my daughter can roam the site, taking herself off to the pot wash and back to the pitch again, means the world. Peaceful, relaxing. And our dog absolutely loves it too!

The birds at dawn are a delight to hear.

The staff are so friendly and approachable. It's clear they've really put some thought, love, time and effort into the layout of the site. Each pitch has so much space. And I love that even though there are other campers, I hardly ever spot another tent. It feels like you temporarily claim your very own spot of woodlands.

I'd highly recommend Barhams to anyone who loves off-grid camping. It's a hidden beauty.

Primitive forest floor tent campsite (four person)

Liked The individual, private pitches.

Disliked Unfortunately after we had pitched our tent we found out that the neither the showers or the pot was facilities were working. I phoned the owners & they informed me they had sent me an email a week earlier offering either 25% off if we still wanted to stay or a full refund.
We didn't have the relaxing break we had planned for as it just made washing pots & having a wash yourself very difficult having to use bottled water to do this. Also the toilets barely worked.
You can't walk all of the woodland area as there are 2 gates saying no one is permitted in the rest of the wood, so all you can do is walk around the very small campsite.
They did supply bottled water but 25 litres of water to wash pots, use as drinking water & to use to have a wash with & between 2 pitches does not last long & was gone in less than 24 hours. So I had to text the camp owners as we had no water left, they did bring some more but all in all the whole mini break was spoilt & I had planned the break for myself & my partners 15th anniversary too.
They did refund me 50% of the cost of the holiday but that didn't make up for our little romantic anniversary break just being so stressful because of everything.

From the manager: A little more information is important for this review. Unfortunately, 10 days before the end of our season, the water pump for the showers and pot wash broke down —an unforeseen issue that can sometimes happen. Despite our best efforts, we were unable to repair it in time. This left us with two choices: either cancel all bookings or inform our guests about the problem, offering a full refund, assistance with finding alternative accommodations, or, if they still wished to stay, a 25 - 50% discount on their booking. We felt it was only right to leave the decision in our guests' hands.

Sharon was informed about this on Monday 23rd September, with her stay starting on October 1st—eight days in advance, she decided she still wanted to stay with us and receive a 50% discount.

For those who chose to stay during this time, we provided sealed bottled water daily, given the circumstances. While it can be tricky to anticipate exact usage, we supplied seven 5-liter bottles daily (30-35 liters) for the four guests. Additionally, I texted Sharon to let her know that spare bottles were available under the sink if needed, which she acknowledged and thanked us for.

As for the other facilities, I personally checked and cleaned the toilets, and they were in working order. I even asked Sharon’s partner twice during their stay how everything was, and all feedback was positive and complimentary, with no mention of any issues.

It’s disheartening to receive this review as at points it's factually incorrect, especially as we work tirelessly to ensure a great camping experience for all our guests.
While certain factors were out of our control, we did try our best to accommodate Sharon under the circumstances.

Excellent 'off-grid' site and friendly staff.

Liked Its a lovely spot, and just what I was looking for as a peaceful site. Considering it's an 'off-grid' site, the facilities were very good. The hosts were very accomodating. Definitely will be back.

Fancy a walk? There are plenty of options around here, including moorland hikes in Dartmoor National Park (10 minutes’ drive) and gentler strolls in the River Dart Country Park (15 minutes) – the latter also with a bike park and an adventure park. If that’s all too strenuous, a ride on the South Devon Railway (15 minutes) will show you some of the scenery instead. For coastal days out, head to local beaches like Teignmouth (25 minutes) and Ness Cove (half an hour) or visit popular seaside towns like Torquay (half an hour) and Brixham (35 minutes). Kid-friendly days out are plentiful too – as well as all the beaches, you might like to meet cute animals at Pennywell Farm (20 minutes) and their more exotic cousins at Paignton Zoo (25 minutes) or feel like a giant at Babbacombe Model Village (25 minutes).
