Primitive grass campervan, tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Spotless and clean and wardens are very welcoming (me and my 2 x dogs!)and helpful.
Had a pitch with a fantastic view and lots of space (all pitches are really generous).
Dog trail around the outside of the site.
Close to pubs and the stunning Lydford Gorge (3 min drive but can be walked).

Powered gravel and cement/asphalt travel trailer campsite (large)

Liked Where do I start?
Location-so quiet, no road noise, beautiful village, walking distance of a pub, bus stop and places to visit,(Lydford Gorge, Lydford church, Lydford village-great fun looking for scarecrows). Immaculate site, immaculate toilet/shower block/washing up area. Staff were lovely and friendly from the start. Lovely little shop on site. Eventhough the site was full, as b/hol weekend, there wasn't that much noise. Even the grounds were neat and tidy and the grass mowed. First site I've been to that I would give a 10/10! Will definitely be going back.

Primitive grass campervan, tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked The site is great but the wardens Neil and Louise make it amazing. Very freindly and helpful, and always working tirelessly to keep the site in order for visitors with little touches here and there. Special mention to highlight the facilities really are kept super clean and were excellent.

Powered grass campsite

Liked Very helpful staff - let us check in early. We got a fantastic plot with uninterrupted views of the Tors in a really large corner pitch - a faultless pitch really, even with a slight slant. Shower block was adequate and clean. The staff seem intent on ensuring the site is calm and peaceful, which it is. Site was a good layout and a nice walk around the edge for the mutts & plenty of dog waste bins kept in good order. Really nice touch with the print outs for walks from the site included when booking - nicely explained too which suggests the authors have actually done them themselves. Overall very pleasant.

Disliked Nothing to dislike. Would have bought a couple of postcards from the shop if there were some - but they had some nice art cards from a local artist so got those instead.

Liked We liked everything about this site. Really warm welcome, large pitch sizes. Super clean facilities. Shop on site well stocked with local produce. Ability to leave site on foot and go out and about. We will be back as there is far more to do in the area. Brilliant.

Primitive grass campervan, tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Lovely wardens, let down by the owners. Nice facilities but not enough for the size of the site. Good walks from site.

Disliked On our first evening onsite, groups of campers were playing loud drum and bass music next to us - reception was shut and we only had an ‘emergency’ number which we didn’t think was appropriate to contact. We couldn’t relax and decided to move to a free spot in a different field, we notified the wardens who were very understanding. We decided to stay in the new service spot to avoid more loud music and annoyance. We were happy to pay to stay at the new spot (even though the site was pretty empty and the spot hadn’t been booked by anyone) however the owners decided to also charge us for moving on the first night. We didn’t think this was fair, as the other campers shouldn’t have been making excessive noise in the first place (apparently there are ‘quiet times’, but they clearly aren’t enforced!!).

If you want peace and quiet, get a service pitch. I don’t think the owners care about what happens in the grass field in terms of excessive noise, as in their words ‘the service pitches make more money’!!

From the manager: This is a largely inaccurate and unfair review. Of note:

1. The owners were not on duty at the time
2. Neighbours around the original pitch, when asked, did not report any excessive noise
3. These guests moved to be next to a family member, in doing so occupying a pitch costing 60% more than their original pitch, for which they were asked to pay only 30% uplift. They were offered a pitch very close for no increase in cost, but refused
4. Wardens are available 24 hours a day via a well-marked doorbell on Reception and a request to move would not have presented any problem

Our site has many, many positive reviews about being a peaceful site, providing excellent customer service.

Route directions

Please beware of using satnav systems when approaching the site due to narrow roads. Approach via the A386. The only route for towed or large units is: From the north: Turn south from the A30 onto the A386 signposted Tavistock and Plymouth. Continue for approximately 3.5 miles, passing the Fox and Hounds pub on the left. In another mile, turn right into Lydford village just before the Dartmoor Inn (look for a tall brown tourist board sign showing Lydford, campsite symbols, golf and Lydford Gorge with a telephone box on the left). Note the junction is slightly obscured so approach slowly. After turning, in half a mile take the first right at the war memorial and in 50 yards bear right at the Y-junction. The site is 100 yards on the left. From the south: Via Tavistock, approach only using the A386. At the Dartmoor Inn turn left into Lydford village. After turning, in half a mile turn right at the war memorial and then in 50 yards bear right at the Y-junction. The site is 100 yards along on the left.

Local attractions

If you’d rather ditch your ride and take public transport from just outside the site, Okehampton to the north and Tavistock to the south are both under half an hour away by bus. Head to the latter for the Museum of Dartmoor Life and cool castle ruins, or take the car if you’re planning on heading deeper into Dartmoor afterwards to climb the rocky High Willhays and Yes Tor peaks (both about 55 minutes’ drive). Tavistock, an ancient stannary and market town on the River Tavy, is also top notch: journey here for the living museum on Morwellham Quay (25 minutes), the historic Buckland Abbey (half an hour) and the family-friendly Tamar Trails Centre activity area. Within a few minutes' walk of the site, veer off on your gorge stroll for a look at Lydford Castle and Saxon Town, a former prison dating back to the ninth century and now managed by English Heritage. It sits next to St Petroc’s Church plus a pub serving food (both also within a five-minute walk of the site). If the kids are keen for the coast, Plymouth is 40 minutes’ drive away.
