  • Glamping stays in Dartmoor National Park
  • Just outside a moorland village and with woodland views
  • Dogs welcome; firepit provided for each hut
Had a baaaad week at work? Filled with shear determination to have a woolly good break overflowing with luxury and glamour? Flock to Dartmoor Shepherd's Huts for a stay in Dartmoor National Park. The huts here are fully insulated with wool from the site’s own sheep, so remember to baaa thank you as you frolic past. And, while they’re traditional in style, they're properly modern and up to date: timber-built, fully-equipped and sleeping up to four people (two in the double bed and another two on airbeds). There are moor points here for the site’s location: pitches are in a peaceful Dartmoor valley with woodland views on one side and the Holy Brook on the other, just outside the moorland village of Holne and in an area packed with activities for all ages and tastes. Naturally there are traditional Devonshire cream teas and the best of local produce around the area, but as it would be wrong to camp on Dartmoor and not cook over a traditional campfire too, all pitches have their own firepits and wood is available to buy from the friendly owners. Dartmoor Shepherd's Huts welcomes well-behaved dogs.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Everything was great. The shower and toilet are clean and hot water was running great. The location is down the valley, quiet and nice. Camp fire is just nice by reasonable price £5 for a bag. Recommend to walk around by public footpaths around.

Disliked: Recycle bin and general waste bin are always full.

Primitive grass tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Excellent site.
Quiet when we stayed.
River for kids to play in and very relaxing.
Fire pit per pitch.
Good toilet block and utility room.

Disliked: If we couldn't get a pitch by the river we wouldn't stay.

Herdwick shepherd's hut

Liked: Everything, the hut was nice and clean, had everything that was needed, perfect setting with the stream outside, the outside area with bbq, seating and fire pit is perfect. The hut was very warm, we still lit the log burner just because we could! Nice location to explore, yes the roads are narrow but it’s what you would expect being in Devon.

Disliked: Absolutely nothing to dislike!

Swaledale shepherd's hut

Liked: Lovely stay! We loved the site and the shepherds hut. We had a mix of weather, we had glorious sunshine and was able to make use of our outdoor space! And we had a night of heavy rain and thunder and lightning, with our log burner on and the sound of rain on the roof it was SO cosy! Will definitely recommend Dartmoor Shepherds huts to our family and friends!

Primitive grass tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite

Liked: The site is beautiful and peaceful and well laid out. We managed to have a fire in our fire pit which was great fun. So glad we were allowed to come in our camper van and got in and out easily.
It was the perfect place to meet with family, good space and great walks from there.

Disliked: The hot water in the washing up and toilet hand wash basins was not always hot. Paper towels for hand drying not refilled during our stay. Happily we are self sufficient but imagine this would be unhelpful for campers.

Primitive grass tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Really straight forward to book and arrive, the pitch was a great size and lovely setting. Peaceful and quiet - just the noise of a babbling stream and birdsong.
Clean washrooms and well maintained facilities. Can walk up to the moor or to local pubs within 15mins. Perfect. Thank you!

Foxglove 2 bedroom cabin

Liked: The surrounding is beautiful. Kids loved playing by the stream. The site is clean. The huts well equipped. Communication with owner is great.

Disliked: Not a dislike as such as we loved it there but a little suggestion to introduce some small table lights in the huts. We stayed in two different ones and we lacked a more dimmed light (only the main light was available) which when travelling with kids is tricky.

Leave the A38 at either Ashburton or Buckfastleigh junctions (depending which way you're coming from), and follow the signs for Holne. When you arrive at Holne, pass the pub on your right and continue up a hill. The road takes a sharp right. Follow the road until you reach a sign for Michelcombe and take a left turn there. Then when you reach a small bridge, follow the sign to the bridle path. The farm is at the end of that road on the left. Take the lower gravelled track. Large motorhomes may not fit through the local narrow lanes. Please check road guides.

Local attractions

Food, glorious food… dive into the middle of the Westcountry’s larder to sample loads of local produce in the area’s restaurants and pubs: the Church House Inn a mile away at Holne shouldn’t prove to be too strenuous a walk back to base once you’ve munched your way through the fresh fish, Dartmoor venison or ploughman platters on offer. If you decide that you need to walk off the Devonshire delights, you won’t be far away from plenty of scenic sights: there are heather-covered hills, wild Dartmoor ponies and walking routes all nearby, along with ancient archaeological landmarks such as stone circles, cairns and clapper bridges. Climb a tor to have your breath taken away again by the scenery below: this is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty with a mix of woodland, reservoir, valley and cave habitats. A few miles further afield, start off at the High Moorland Visitor Centre to find out everything you need to know about Dartmoor’s history, wildlife and culture, then go on a history tour to take in Buckfast Abbey and Devon’s castles or take a wildlife trip to the area’s farm attractions Pennywell Farm, Totnes Rare Breed Farm and the Buckfast Butterflies and Dartmoor Otter Sanctuary. If you’ve had one too many cream teas (it’s easily done) and prefer to take in the scenery while sitting down, steam along to the South Devon Railway for valley views from Buckfastleigh to Totnes. There are baleloads of family attractions in the area for you all to flock to: let the kids walk on water at the award-winning River Dart Country Park, ape the baboons and gorillas at Paignton Zoo or goggle at the sharks at the UK’s biggest aquarium, the National Marine Aquarium in Plymouth.
