  • Wild-camping site a five-minute drive from Great Torrington
  • Bideford 15 minutes’ drive; Westward Ho! 25 minutes
  • Resident animals; free-range eggs and meats to buy; individual firepit
A farm a five-minute drive from Great Torrington, in rural Devon, is the setting for Hazel Meadow Camping, a chilled back-to-basics site with grass pitches the maintenance of which is partially down to a hard-working (hard-munching?) herd of sheep. The sheep are just one of the species populating this smallholding, which is also home to donkeys and free-range chickens, whose eggs can be purchased for your morning omelette. A Greener Camping Club site (membership is available upon booking), Hazel Meadow has an environmentally conscious philosophy. This starts the minute you park your car, right by the entrance, where you are given a wheelbarrow (and all the necessary assistance) to transport your gear to your pitch. So that’s a car-free site, with plenty of recycling points (including compost bins for food waste), great-tasting drinking water (so don’t forget your reusable water bottle), composting toilets and hot water for showers and washing up. Each pitch has its own firepit, and the gear to light it (such as kindling and logs) can be bought at the honesty shop. Depending on the time of year, you might also be able to purchase locally reared meats for the barbecue. Speaking of which: please refrain from bringing a disposable one, and instead hire a barbecue set on site; it comes with firelighters and locally made charcoal for an easy-peasy experience. And as your bangers start wafting delicious aromas all around, keep an eye on the spectacular sunset and an ear out for the hooting of the local barn owls…

Local attractions

In Bideford (15 minutes’ drive), check out the vintage stock at the Bideford Railway Heritage Centre, then cross the River Torridge to take a selfie with the statue of Tarka the Otter, on Bideford Quay. Next, it’s time to catch a ferry to Lundy Island, in the Bristol Channel, where you might spot seals and puffins. Hazel Meadow’s resident Herdwicks will not feel undermined if you spend a few hours at BIG Sheep (20 minutes), a family attraction with animal shows (such as sheep racing and duck agility trials) and rides ranging from gentle swan pedalos to hair-raising rollercoasters. Westward Ho! (25 minutes) has a large sandy beach backed by a pebbly ridge and anchored at one end by a craggy area with rockpools and a tidal pool. The South West Coast Path passes right through the village, and you can follow it in a western direction to reach the dramatic Abbotsham Cliffs.
