  • Relaxed, off-grid site with views over Devon’s hills towards Exeter
  • City centre a 10-min drive, Topsham 25 and Exmouth beach 35 mins away
  • Communal firepit; free-range eggs and firewood for sale on site
A lovely lookout across to Devon’s capital city is indeed a rather big draw at Exeter View Stables, a relaxed and friendly site in the leafy surrounds of this cracking county. If you’re one for eco-friendly expeditions, here’s a bit of news for you too: this park is completely off-grid – with all power coming from the sun – and it has a water borehole and compost toilet as well (and a rather smart one at that – even harsh compost loo critics among previous guests have given this one the nod of approval…) When dusk falls, warmth comes from the communal firepit overlooking the surrounding hills and across to the estuary; you can even see the cathedral lights glimmer after dark. Build up your own blaze for eats or get the barbecue going – firewood (as well as eggs from Exeter View Stables' free-roaming chickens) can be bought at the park and supermarkets are about a 10-minute drive away. Not coming by car? Exeter St David’s train station is the same distance away by taxi. There's a warm welcome for those toting their backpack along on foot or by bike – in fact the folk on site are so keen to encourage such behaviour they even offer a discount for eco travellers (be sure to book an eco pitch to take advantage of that). This is an off-grid site but facilities are available for phone charging (phew). If you do have your own wheels, attractions in the local area to seek out include the northern part of craggy Dartmoor National Park, 20 minutes away, for hikes through woodland and ancient valleys. Adventures done for the day, head back to base to unwind safe in the knowledge you’ll have a bit of peace and quiet – the owners of this site keep numbers low to ensure it never gets overrun.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked The views were amazing, the site was quiet at the time, so felt quiet private. Good price for peak season near Exeter. Having our own little fire on our plot of an evening.
Level plot to put the tent on, nice shade from the trees when very hot.

Disliked If the site had been busy, you'd be very close to your neighbours!
Wasn't a fan of the composting toilets. Very low to the ground and can see and smell lots of stuff!
No hot water to wash up and tempermental showers

Liked Lovely view, good location (10 min drive to Exeter) and I felt very safe as a solo female camper both times I stayed. Compost toilets and showers all clean and in good working order.

Primitive grass tent or campervan campsite

Liked Stunning location with excellent view, great showers, communal fire and very friendly. The compost loos aren't for everyone but they have made these as nice as they can be. I didn't book until late on the day and couldn't arrive until 7pm but they were more than happy and met me at the gate. I recommend booking in advance as could book the next day as they were fully booked.

Disliked There is a electric tower on the site which you can hear buzzing. This may not be for everyone.

Local attractions

As well as all the sights of Exeter, which include the cathedral, a clutch of Tudor buildings and the medieval Underground Passages in the centre, another place to spend a stint is Topsham village, a 25-minute drive away – the park here is a top spot for birding along the estuary or taking a tug boat over to the pub just across the water. Further on towards the coast is Exmouth beach, a family-friendly, sandy space accessible on the train line (from both Topsham and Exeter), with restaurants and cafés to totter towards in town. Once the kids have worn out their bucket and spade, take them on the rides at Crealy Theme Park & Resort in Sidmouth, 20 minutes away. Grownups might like to factor in a little time in this town too for roams around Bicton Park Botanical Gardens and ganders at the Regency-era architecture – if the kids start to moan, simply pack them off for more sandy times at Sidmouth beach.
