  • Family-friendly site 10 minutes' walk from Dawlish Warren beach
  • Easily accessible from main roads and by public transport
  • Run by keen campers; train station a short walk away
Somewhere to stay on the south Devon coast within strolling distance of a splendid sandy beach?Grab your bucket and spade and set off for Five Trees Camping, a mere 10 minutes’ walk from Dawlish Warren and its family-friendly beach. And that’s not all that’s easily accessible from this site, which is equally well placed for coastal capers and countryside outings. It’s also possible to walk to a fab 500-acre nature reserve, set out for strolls on the South West Coast Path or pick up local bike paths, and there’s a whole heap of attractions within a short drive (including Exeter and Dartmoor National Park). Dawlish Warren train station is a short walk away too for jaunts via public transport. The folk that own Five Trees are extremely enthusiastic campers themselves – and that’s always a promising thing for guests, as it means they’re likely to understand the things that make a holiday go with a swing. They like to describe the vibe as ‘old-school camping with all the modern amenities’ – and that means the pitches (spread across 1.5 acres of grassland) have access to modern toilets and showers (including baby changing facilities) plus drinking water. If your family isn’t complete without its four-legged member, this is the place for you: dogs are welcome, but they’ll need to be kept on a lead (and under control) at all times, and cleaned up after. And if your holiday isn’t a holiday without some alfresco cooking, that’s also sorted: gas and electric barbecues are permitted (sorry, no charcoal barbecues). Supplies can be acquired a mile away in Dawlish, as can takeaways or pub meals.

Powered grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Everything was accessible, train, buses, supermarket, restaurants, pubs, so I didn't have to drive and park everywhere, site is central to loads of places, Teignmouth, Paignton, Torquay which was great for me because we could have a few drinks in local pubs and no driving!!

Disliked: Local cash points charge you, and some car parks are card only.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Never been to a campsite so clean and the owner so lovely. Everything about this campsite was immaculate!! Owner and his beautiful dog were brilliant and he genuinely cared about us even though we were strangers ! Going as far to offer us cups of tea and even an air bed to borrow ! From the start it was a brilliant experience and we are sad we only stayed one night ! The site is so close to the beach with less than a 10 min walk. Thank you !!

Disliked: Can’t fault

Local attractions

The coast has to be first port of call, right? Spend your day paddling and sandcastle-building at Dawlish Warren, explore Dawlish Warren Nature Reserve, stride out along the South West Coast Path or head up to Starcross (10 minutes’ drive) for a ferry across the River Exe to Exmouth. Heading inland for a while, you might like to explore Devon Sculpture Park (15 minutes), take to the trails of Haldon Forest Park (20 minutes) or head up to Dartmoor National Park (half an hour) for days of hiking, horse riding or mountain biking. Exeter (half an hour by car or train) is a good bet for a day out too. If you’re looking for something to keep the kids amused, try the likes of the Crealy Theme Park (half an hour), Paignton Zoo (40 minutes) or a ride on the Dartmoor Railway (45 minutes). Haldon’s Go Ape course (20 minutes) and the Grand Prix go-kart track (15 minutes’ walk) are also on hand for those who need a bit more activity.
