The view from our pitch

  • Farm site with spectacular views of the north Devon coast
  • A three-minute drive to Combe Martin beach; 15 minutes to Exmoor Zoo
  • Pizza nights and cooked breakfasts; a mile from the village centre
As you'll have seen from its pics, Girt Down Farm has a pretty dramatic setting. With Combe Martin village centre's pubs and cafés about a mile away, it's also a mightily convenient spot for family-oriented stays. This is a working farm that’s home to Exmoor sheep and cattle; you'll most likely spot the farmer going about his daily business on his quad bike with Willow, his trusty pup. Other than those two whizzing about there'll be little to disturb you here, so make sure to pack that book you've always wanted to finish or perhaps some paintbrushes if you're feeling creative… Girt Down Farm also has an old railway carriage that's been repurposed as a chillout area where you can sit back and bask in the Devon sun (even when it's not shining quite as brightly, there are still some great vistas to be had from this undercover area). Essentials (like loos and showers) are also on hand. Barbecues are allowed here (off the ground), so feel free to get grilling. Seasonal greens are available – you're free to pick a few salad leaves to go with anything you've rustled up, but please make sure there's some left for other guests. The site staff also do cook-up nights, putting their wood-fired pizza oven to excellent use. And breakfast? A full English can be ordered the night before and picked up at the farmhouse in the morning.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Gives the impression of bare basic camp but actually has a lot of amenities tucked away toward the bottom of the hil. There was a community hut with a table, chairs, some items to borrow like a firepit or wind breaker (wish I'd spotted that sooner!), fridge freezer; a porta cabin with 2 showers, sinks, toilets; and an outside wash station. All with hot water. All cleaned regularly. We didn't check the wifi, but mobile coverage was very good.

If you wanted, a bucket of wood, tinder, and kindling it can be bought from the farmer, who will drop it off at your pitch and make sure you have everything you need.

The view is indeed spectacular, and you have plenty of room between pitches. Even if you were close enough, the wind would drown out most other noise. You are indeed exposed! Bring some warm clothes, even if you plan to sit round the fire. But don't overload the fire pit if gusty, or you will be chasing a tumbling fire log as we saw happen on another pitch!

We only stayed the night, but my 6 yo boy was enamoured with the place, and was excited to show me how to roast marshmallows for smores. The huge open field, the view of Combe Martin at the bottom of the valley and sea is beautiful. There seemed to be a few trails to explore, and you are only 15 minutes from Watermouth Castle.

Disliked Nothing to dislike, we stayed during heavy rain spells with 20mph winds gusting to 32mph and it was still a lovely place to revisit!

Just check the weather, prepare for wind. Jet stove recommended if you're not using windbreak, a firepit, or getting takeout.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked What a view Girt down offers. Its a beautiful farm and the owners are really friendly.

Disliked Could do with more showers. I can imagine on really busy times the queue would last ages.
and a few pot holes in the lane could do with filling in.

But again these are small issues for the lovely site

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Great campsite. Would recommend having more toilets at the top of the field as it’s a long walk down to the bottom. There is one porta loo in the middle of the field but this was full on our last day, so could not use this.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Beautiful campsite with views over the sea to die for!

The campsite was spotless, facilities are regularly cleaning throughout the day and restocked.

Loved that there is a small cabin with which you can use the fridge or freezer, get yourself a hot drink or make use of the table and chairs.

The owners were so friendly and able to offer some great recommendations for beaches or attractions that we’d enjoy as a family

Liked Great camp site. The views were amazing and it felt a privilege to cook outside looking down towards Combe Martin. The owners are really friendly and although we stayed on a very busy weekend the toilets and showers were kept really clean. Would recommend with out a doubt.

Local attractions

You could well find yourself shuttling your travel tribe back and forth between Girt Down Farm and Combe Martin beach (three minutes' drive), a family-friendly swimming spot with a range of cafés, bars and other eateries. Watersports fans can also get paddling here, while kayak hire is available for those who haven't brought their own. Pre-teen palaeontologists will be particularly easy to keep occupied here, as it's also home to Combe Martin Wildlife and Dinosaur Park (five minutes). If non-extinct creatures are called for, it's a simple 15-minute trip to see Exmoor Zoo's vast array of cute critters. Tots still got energy to expend? Take them to The Milky Way Adventure Park (45 minutes) to let off any remaining steam. This part of Devon also has oodles of natural spots worthy of your attention: on the coast, Heddon Valley (15 minutes) and Woolacombe (20 minutes) are likely to win many hearts, while inland there's Tarr Steps (40 minutes) in gorgeous Exmoor National Park.
