Like your holidays to be eco-friendly and within a 15-minute drive of beaches, scenic walks and at least one splendid town? Start packing your things for Edgemoor Camping, a small off-grid site in a rewilded field just outside Exmoor National Park and within a 15-minute drive of Combe Martin beaches, the Tarka Trail and Barnstaple. This four-acre field is in the process of being rewilded, which means that it is attracting more and more wildlife, including hares, pheasants, buzzards and small birds, in addition to having wildflowers and 500 newly planted trees. All of the facilities – including the composting toilets, hot showers and washing-up sinks – have been handmade by team member Alan using reclaimed materials. As an eco-friendly site, of course recycling facilities are also on hand. Head to Edgemoor Camping for stunning sunsets, sunrises and starry skies when the conditions are right. The nights are dark, so torches will come in handy, and firepits are available for guests to use (useful for keeping warm while stargazing…). There are three rescue hens and a timid cat on site, so dogs are not permitted. For heading out and about, the site is handily placed on National Cycle Route 3 and there are plenty of local bike hire shops where you can rent wheels for this or the Tarka Trail (which starts in Barnstaple). For walking and freshwater dips, Exmoor National Park is a short drive away, and for surfing or sea swimming, beaches are within a 15- to 20-minute drive of the site. Finally, only a mile down the road is Bratton Fleming, which has a village shop, park and the occasional pop-up pub nights and food vans.
