  • 42-acre eco site with wide views of the north Cornwall coast
  • Footpath to Porthtowan beach; 10 minutes' drive to St Agnes
  • Vegetarian café on site; campfires and barbecues permitted
Off to the north Cornwall coast and fancy being able to walk to the beach easily from where you’re staying? The place is Mount Pleasant Eco Park, and the beach in question is Porthtowan, a gorgeous long sandy stretch with plenty of space to play in on the sand or up in the dunes and a summer lifeguard service for swimmers and surfers. Getting there simply involves a strong along the footpath that runs directly from the site (and also takes you to a couple of pubs and takeaways within a short stroll too). The pretty village of St Agnes and larger town of Redruth are both within a 10-minute drive should you need more eating/drinking/shopping options. It all adds up to a fabulous location – but the team here haven’t relied on that alone to draw people to their park. Much love and care has gone into setting up this site, which is part of a 42-acre community space providing lots of useful things to local residents (think organic garden space, eco-friendly workspaces and an education programme). Events are often hosted here, so you may well be able to catch some live music or a traditional skills workshop if you like. No worries if you’d like to do your own thing though – there’s so much space here that you can always find a peaceful corner well away from the action even when there’s an event in full swing. All facilities have been well thought out here – compost toilets and solar showers among them. Barbecues and campfires are permitted if you’d like to try outdoor cooking; if not, the café is open Wednesday to Sunday for tasty plant-based meals using local produce.

Powered cement/asphalt and grass campsite

Liked: Great location for Porthtowan, nice peaceful spot and felt safe on my own. It was great to be able to have a bbq and campfire.

Disliked: Was a bit noisy in the daytime with groundworks being done and tractors constantly going back and forth, but I presume they are just taking advantage of the quieter winter season to get things done.

Powered cement/asphalt and grass campsite

Liked: What an amazing place! We had such a wonderful time. It's got that lovely wild feel, but it's also really well organised, which we appreciated. The walk down to the beach was beautiful, and the facilities were just what we needed. The kids had a blast exploring and we felt completely safe letting them roam. We especially loved that fires were allowed – it made for some a cozy evening, even though the wind tried its best to put a damper on things (luckily, our pitch was perfectly sheltered!). We'll definitely be back!

Powered cement/asphalt and grass campsite

Liked: Sea view, ethos of campsite (environmentally friendly), sauna, amazing food at canteen, size of pitch

Disliked: Shelter for toilets and showers could be more substantial, especially for winter seasons, no light in toilets by sauna area

Primitive grass tent or RV campsite (large, wild)

Liked: I liked that unicorn beach is only a 10 minute walk.

The staffer were nice enough.

Disliked: There was 0 information informing me that there was a wedding and a reggae event 2 of the nights I had books - I'd have avoided this place if I were informed as I'm just about to go through a divorce and went to find some peace, not a wedding - I was kept awake untill 1am, two nights running. I had to leave at 4am to head home after the very bassy reggae event. I wasn't best pleased.
I think the sight should somehow inform their campers that it is a sight that hosts and holds events. I chose the middle of nowhere for a reason.

The ground was incredibly stoney so pitching my tent wasn't a straight forward job, I had to dig first!

The showers and toilets were only cleaned once out of the three days I was there. I had to clean them myself before use.

Assigned primitive grass tent or RV campsite (large)

Liked: Lots of things! The friendly surfboard makers and the nice walks around the site. Lots of interesting and innovative ideas including the car tyre amphitheatre and the bottle windows. The kettle was very handy. Enjoyed a number of interesting chats with other visitors. Great rabbits.

Disliked: Please change your keg beers and support your local microbreweries.

Liked: We really loved the layout of the campsite. The kids were able to safely run free, lots of areas for hide and seek, plenty of space for them to ride their bikes. Beautiful views of the surrounding countryside. Excellent facilities. Really lovely walk down the hill to the beach.

Local attractions

Porthtowan beach will almost certainly be your first stop (possibly even the very minute you’ve dropped your bags off) but then what? Well, perhaps a walk along the South West Coast Path to see some more of that coastal scenery (Chapel Porth and the Wheal Coates mine are not far off), or a direct route to one of the other gorgeous beaches – perhaps Gwithian (15 minutes’ drive) or Perranporth (20 minutes). A stop in the lovely village of St Agnes (10 minutes) is a must, and art lovers will surely also want to head over to St Ives (25 minutes) to explore Tate St Ives and the Barbara Hepworth Museum. The north Cornwall coast has plenty to keep you busy for many a day, but if you fancy a change of scenery it’s not far to get to the south coast for days at Falmouth, Trebah Garden, Glendurgan Garden and Gyllyngvase beach (all about half an hour away).
