What customers say

This unique, budget-friendly campsite boasts a military history theme. Guests rave about owner Ian's helpfulness and passion. Facilities are basic but clean, with hot showers a plus. Great Lizard Peninsula access, offering a quiet escape. Mostly good value, though a few found facilities too basic for the price, and one cited safety concerns.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked Location

Disliked Pod wasn't ready, the owner was more interested in putting up a marquee which was right in front of our accommodation & we weren't able to park our vehicle next to us.
We were asked to wait for him to clean the pod by which time we'd had enough & we left.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked The site was clean well maintained-

Ian was lovely very welcoming chatty and showed us round when we arrived, reached out via text prior to arrival which we liked.

The site has a portaloo toilet and shower, both were really clean. Shower was powerful and hot!

Can’t say I’ve been in a portaloo shower before, but it definitely wasn’t a bad experience!

This site wouldn’t be everyone’s cup of tea but for £16 a night we thought it was fantastic!

Military camping pod (three person)

Liked We loved the quirkiness of being in a spacious open field on our own space with army vehicles surrounding us. Staff were very helpful attentive, friendly and available for our questions and any support we needed. The army truck pod had all the basic cooking requirements. Had our own porta loo and nice hot shower.

Disliked It is a very basic accommodation, luckily we had brought a mattress topper which helped ease the comfort as this could have been a less comfy experience. As we had fantastic weather a fridge would have been a bonus.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked Liked everything about this site. Firstly ease of communication, Ian answered the phone straight away when I called. Super friendly and so helpful. Even showed me and my son around the museum on what probably should of been his day off ! (Sunday)
This site has everything you need at an incredibly reasonable price. Sad to read the negative review below. Someone clearly didn't see the point and the work / passion involved in keeping the history of this place alive so we can all learn about it. Plus these people are volunteers !!! Location is great for exploring all around the lizard area. Highly recommend staying here. Shower and toilet spotlessly clean. Shower was lovely and hot. We loved it. Thank you Ian we appreciated your time !

Military camping pod (two person)

Liked The pod has everything you need for a glamping adventure including a lovely warm shower and your own private toilet.

Ian was so helpful and gave us a behind the scenes tour of the museum when we arrived.

We loved how quiet the area was, there was other campers on site but we were tucked away and wouldn’t have even known they were there

From the manager: Thanks for your review, was nice to share our plans for the museum, hopefully see you both again.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked Great place to stay! Ian the owner was lovely and had a very fast response and turned up within a few minutes to show us about etc!
we loved all the old military equipment and was lucky enough to stay over a weekend when Ian had an open weekend for his museum there, he even fired some of the old rifles and cannons with blanks which was amazing to see and hear and had a little catering trailer open there for you to buy refreshments etc during the museum opening weekend
the site is in a great location and level ground and well looked after, also very remote and quiet, we have an autistic toddler who is often a bit wild and loud etc, we had no problems here at all in the 17 nights we stayed in the end, nice clean toilet and a hot shower to and fresh drinking water from a tap.

And I certainly wouldn’t let the odd negative review put you off!!

You need to read all the information Ian has provided before booking, as if for his amazing price he charges per night, you expect a clubhouse/bar and all day children’s entertainment and evening entertainment and big children’s play areas etc like the big very exspensive corporate sites, then that’s the only reason I could see anyone be disappointed.

We will certainly be going back in the near future when kids school holidays again as a perfect site for us and very happy with our stay!

Disliked That we had to leave and couldn’t live there permanently in a static caravan as such a lovely site

Local attractions

Around the miles to the south, the Lizard Point (five minutes' drive) is the southernmost point in mainland Britain. Come for the far-reaching views, then head west along the coast to see the dramatic rocks at Kynance Cove (15 minutes), or make your way towards Cadgwith (10 minutes) in the opposite directions and experience the Devil's Frying Pan, a sea cave that collapsed in on itself. Inland, you could try your luck at angling at Countybridge Fishery (10 minutes) or head to Helston (15 minutes), the home of Flambards Theme Park and the Helston Railway, a restored Victorian steam line. Also inland (although on the edge of the pretty Helford river) is Gweek (15 minutes), where you can learn about marine conservation at the Cornish Seal Sanctuary. Another nice thing about the Lizard is that, while it feels distinct from the rest of the county, it's actually very well connected to the rest of Cornwall. Getting out to popular seaside towns like Falmouth (40 minutes), St Ives (40 minutes) or even Newquay (an hour) is easy if you fancy a change of scene, and must-see attractions like the Eden Project (an hour and 15 minutes) are close enough to be on your itinerary too.
