  • Peaceful eco-retreat a 10-minute drive from Cornwall’s south coast
  • The Lost Gardens of Heligan 10 minutes’ drive; Newquay 50 minutes
  • Organic food hampers; foraging and breadmaking courses; massages
Beaches, gardens, the South West Coast Path… there’ll be heaps for you to do and explore during your stay at Cotna Eco Retreat, on a small farm in the Roseland Peninsula of south Cornwall. And while you’re there, you can also congratulate yourself on doing your bit for the planet, for this is a low-impact, sustainable choice. How so? Well, the farm produces its own green energy (from the sun and the wind), for starters; its water comes from a natural spring, and there are multiple recycling options (including composting toilets). Organically grown fruit and vegetables, plus home-made jams and sauces and sourdough bread, find their way into vegetarian hampers available to buy; and last but not least, especially for animal-loving children (and adults), the site comes with resident beasties – from chickens and ducks, to dogs and cats. Cotna sits in a green valley surrounded by peaceful and glorious countryside – you’re in the South Coast–Central Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty here – and within walking distance of the coast. Shaded woodland paths (owners Sara and Dave will be happy to direct you to the best ones) lead to beaches like Gorram Haven (40 minutes’ walk) and Portmellon (55 minutes); or you could cheat, take the car and be at the seaside within about 10 minutes, but where’s the fun in that? And if you’d rather not stray very far from the site at all, you can still fill your day by learning about foraging, no-dig gardening or breadmaking, or by arranging a shiatsu massage or a reiki treatment.

Ismay shepherd's hut

Liked: It was a lovely place and was upgraded due to booking oversight

Disliked: We lost a night due to booking oversight, I had 7 ticks in 24 hours as the wild life roam free, there where no signs up warning of this till after we addressed it

From the manager: Hi there Duane,

I'm sorry you did not have a great experience as we genuinely do our very best to help our guests have a lovely stay at Cotna.
Having addressed this ourselves by offering you a beautiful yurt instead of the smaller shepherd's hut I'm sorry if it wasn't clear that the upgrade was one night less due to previous bookings.
Tics are an issue all around the southwest at the moment with increased numbers of deer and I'm glad you were able to remove yours. We immediately responded by putting up a notice about this as this was the first instance of guests getting any.

Best wishes,
Cotna Team

Local attractions

Among the three main zones at The Lost Gardens of Heligan (10 minutes’ drive) is the Jungle, a lush area of tropical and exotic plants, including banana trees, bamboo tunnels and giant rhubarb. You can sample the heritage fruit and vegetables grown in the Productive Garden area at the on-site café. You might recognise the imposing harbour at Charlestown (25 minutes) from several films and TV shows, such as ‘Poldark’. Continue the maritime theme at the Shipwreck Treasure Museum, which displays coins, cannon balls and other artefacts from famous (and not-so-famous) shipwrecks, as well as holding temporary exhibitions on famed explorers. Head to the north coast of Cornwall and spend a day in Newquay (50 minutes), watching the surfers riding the waves at Fistal Beach, admiring the sharks, turtles and other marine creatures at the Blue Reef Aquarium Newquay, and hiking up the Headland to catch the sunset.
