  • Back-to-basics north Cornwall pitches five minutes' walk from St Agnes
  • Perranporth 10 minutes' drive; 35 minutes to St Ives
  • Trevaunance Cove and South West Coast Path five minutes' walk
Fancy leaving the stresses of modern life behind for a while, going off grid and chilling out among natural views? Make it a reality at Wild Camping at Wheal Friendly, where the pitches are surrounded by evergreen trees and have views out over the gorgeous north Cornwall coast. With the historic Wheal Friendly Engine House forming part of the backdrop as well, it all adds up to a truly lovely spot for a quiet Cornwall break. Pitches here replicate the wild camping approach so there’s very little by way of facilities, although there are portable toilets for a little touch of convenience. Barbecues are allowed and dogs are permitted on site, but please note there’s no water supply here so you’ll need to bring your own for both drinking and washing up. One of the main highlights here is that lovely sea view, but that’s only part of it… because it’s actually only five minutes’ walk from the site to the coast, where you can head out for a walk along the gorgeous South West Coast Path or settle down on the beach at Trevaunance Cove. It’s a fabulous little spot with soft sand, cafés, surf hire and kayak tours, so it’s easy to while away a good number of hours/days there. Well-known Cornish towns like Newquay and St Ives are around a half-hour drive from this site, but you won’t have to travel that far for your everyday essentials. Pubs, cafés and a village shop are only about a five-minute walk away in St Agnes, and the village has bus services to Truro, Redruth and Newquay – making this a splendid spot for a car-free Cornwall holiday.

Local attractions

With the South West Coast Path five minutes’ walk away and St Agnes Beacon about 25 minutes away, this is an excellent spot for exploring the north Cornwall coast on foot. That’s not the only way to get around though – you could hire kayaks from Trevaunance Cove (five minutes’ walk), go horse riding at Goonbell Riding Centre (five minutes’ drive) or play a scenic round at Perranporth Golf Club (15 minutes). Daredevils may like to try things like the Mega Slip and Slide Cornwall (10 minutes) or the climbing trail at Via Ferrata Cornwall (half an hour), while more gentle sorts aim for places like the Flicka Foundation Donkey Sanctuary (25 minutes) or a ride on the Helston Railway (35 minutes). Heading back to the north coast, you may also like to visit the long sandy Perranporth beach (10 minutes), the historic tin mine buildings at Wheal Coates (five minutes) and the famed art galleries of St Ives (35 minutes).
