Grass pitches with spectacular views

  • Wild campsite with sea views 15 minutes’ drive from Bude in Cornwall
  • South West Coast Path five minutes’ drive and Bodmin Moor 40 minutes
  • Dog-friendly off-grid camping field; surfing beach 10 minutes’ drive
It’s time to get wild on Cornwall’s north coast. Family-friendly Trelay View Campsite is a simple pop-up sort of place where you can have a real outdoor adventure with the kids – and it’s one with spectacular views over woodland and valleys right to the Atlantic Ocean. And the good stuff doesn’t stop there. The shops, pubs and beaches of Bude are 15 minutes’ drive, the sweeping sandy stretch of Widemouth Bay (10 minutes) is everyone’s favourite local surfing spot. The farm is also home to the Monster Slip and Slide Cornwall and a maize maze (just two minutes' drive away from the site entrance), where overnight guests get discounts. That’s everybody sorted then – oh, and as the site is dog-friendly, your canine chums can come along for the ride too. A few other things you should know: this is a wild site, with toilet facilities and a shower, but no electricity. What you do get are spacious pitches on a camping field with bags of room for the kids to run around, and plenty of privacy if you want to hunker down around your campfire or spark up a barbecue by night (just remember to bring a couple of torches to light your way around after dark).

Primitive grass campervan campsite

Liked: Price only.Only had to pay deposit

Disliked: Didn't stay took ages to find and when we did just not up to scratch. Not much of a field more piece of waste land .Not for us might be ok as a stop over if desperate.Owner did apologize for not seeing us and requested balance of money the next day . Explained we didn't stay.

From the manager: -Review based on not staying at our site
-Our contact details such as phone number and email address have been provided, however no contact was attempted
-Pitch up provides clear directions to find the site
-The site was described as ‘Wasteland’ this is inaccurate, offensive and off putting for future bookings
-Factually incorrect we have a large green field that has 360 degree views of the sea and surrounding valley
-Doesn’t reflect the previous 10/10 reviews

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Lovely far reaching views.
Flat pitch

Disliked: I was bikepacking so had a tiny tent and minimum equipment.
There was no shelter from the elements as the site is a long thin field right on the top of the hill. The facilities, a tap and portaloo were right at one end of the field near the gate and a road junction so I felt safer camped at the opposite end of the field.
I’m sure that it’s lovely for campers with more equipment but I wouldn’t recommend it for back/bike packing especially in the inclement weather that I experienced.

Local attractions

Keep the kids active with days out on the water at Tamar Lakes Activity Centre (20 minutes’ drive), where you can go paddleboarding and kayaking or learn to sail a dinghy. Families can easily spend a day on the fairground rides and in the petting zoo at The Milky Way Adventure Park (half an hour), or take toddlers to feed lambs (in spring) and cuddle baby goats at The BIG Sheep (45 minutes). When a day at the seaside is requested, you have a choice of North Cornwall beaches within about 15 minutes’ drive, including the popular sands and rock pool at Summerleaze Beach, the saltwater Bude Sea Pool (also 15 minutes) and the dog-friendly expanse at National Trust-owned Sandymouth Bay Beach (20 minutes). Surfers – novice and expert alike – should hotfoot it to Widemouth Bay (10 minutes) to catch its consistent Atlantic waves. If you’d rather explore on foot, grab a pair of comfy walking boats and have a meander along the South West Coast Path (five minutes), or go further afield for a yomp over heathland to the mysterious Nine Stones Stone Circle (40 minutes) on gorgeous Bodmin Moor.
