  • Off-grid and eco-conscious family site in the Sussex countryside
  • Half an hour’s drive from Ashdown Forest and Brighton
  • Communal firepit and picnic tables; pubs a short walk away
Say hello to festival vibes and sunset skies across an off-grid, eco-conscious retreat named Sunset Tree Camping. This family-friendly site has creativity at its core and it’s a place for people who want more than just a nice place to plant down a while. This place is all about connection and community – there’s a communal firepit, picnic benches in the woods, solar lighting at night and plenty of green space to spread out and make friends. In addition to all of this, the dog-friendly family site is in the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, less than half an hour’s drive from Ashdown Forest (an ancient forest once used for deer hunting and now a fine spot for hikes, horse riding, and archaeology). There’s a playground and two pubs on the green in Staplefield, 10 minutes’ walk away, and shops and another pub 25 minutes’ walk away in nearby Handcross. For fine dining, just head west to Slaugham (15 minutes’ walk). Those of you planning to cook a big spread on site can locate larger supermarkets in Haywards Heath (10 minutes’ drive) too. All of the above makes this a handy location – almost as handy as the site facilities, which include a sheltered communal eating area with a four-metre banquet table lit by solar lighting, a hot shower, composting toilets, solar lights in the woods and a wash room with a sink and running water. The on-site Sunrise Café serves tasty breakfasts such as bacon, sausage and egg rolls (gluten-free and veggie options are availble), as well as pastries and coffee or tea. Guests are encouraged to lend their voices, music and hands to help with co-creating the site’s ‘enchanted village’ but if you’re feeling like a lazier day, there’s a hammock in the Dragon Woods and plenty of wildlife to spot around the trees. Kids can also play with the bats, balls, bikes and scooters. From Staplefield, feel free to get out on wanders across the Sussex countryside – perhaps to Nymans (25 minutes’ walk) a National Trust garden with house ruins? There’s plenty of space to relax or play when you’re back, as well as join families, friends and strangers in stargazing at night.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Nice space, not too big so it doesn’t get too busy. friendly atmosphere. Everything you need for a campsite.

Disliked: The ground is fairly rutted with old tractor trails but there’s plenty of level ground to pitch. A slight hum of traffic from the A23 but it becomes white noise so very minor dislikes.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Nice, relaxed, pitch-where-you-like-in-the-field site with a great space at the bottom of the field for kids to play - there's a little wooded area with bikes, toys etc where they can run wild.

Good composting toilets and washing up areas with gas for heating water.

There are a couple of pubs within walking distance.

The site owners were great - really friendly and helpful.

Disliked: Nothing significant.

If you're looking for somewhere absolutely silent at night then maybe note that the A23 passes somewhere in the area so you can hear a gentle hum of traffic late at night when everything else quietens down.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: The camping spot was amazing, great for the kids with the forest. I couldn't get my boy out of there he lived it so so much. The weather was beautiful and we were able to make full use of the stretch tent and family benches, where we had a bbq. I could recommend it enough, we will definitely be back.

Local attractions

Nymans isn’t the only grand historic house or estate in the surrounding Sussex countryside. Borde Hill Garden (10 minutes’ drive), privately owned, has all sorts of rare plants, a gorgeous rose garden and parklands for picnics. The National Trust’s Wakehurst (20 minutes) is yet another wildlife haven and the location of a huge seed conservation project, all next to an Elizabethan mansion. If that’s not enough magnolia, rose and other natural scents for you, the National Trust - Sheffield Park & Garden (half an hour) is a landscaped garden that runs workshops such as forest bathing and photography. When you’re fully recharged and ready for brighter lights and beaches, Brighton (half an hour) – including its piers, aquarium and artsy independent shops – is to the south of the site.
