  • Quiet family-friendly farm site on eight acres of Kent farmland
  • A 45-minute drive from Hastings; half an hour to the coast
  • Fishing lake and kitchen facilities on site; fresh eggs to buy
Heading to the Kent countryside in a quest for a rural retreat near to steam railways, castle ruins and vineyards? As well as assorted farm animals on site, there are eight acres of farmland at Setts Wood Camping and Glamping, including a fishing lake (charges apply) and a wooded area for classic games of hide and seek. Down a private lane and well away from the road, there is certainly plenty of unwinding to be done at this quiet site. Don't worry about being too far removed though, as it's still within reach of several historic towns including Hastings (a 45-minute drive away), and has several sandy beaches within half an hour’s drive. The local town of Tenterden is five minutes’ drive away for a convenient collection of breweries, restaurants and supermarkets where you can pick up supplies for a picnic or a barbecue back at the farm. You can also buy fresh free-range eggs on site every morning, in a splendid selection of different colours. Store any leftovers in the communal fridge and make use of the other kitchen facilities such as a kettle and sink. Other handy facilities include toilets and a shower block, for washing off any grains of sand accumulated from the beaches at Camber Sands and Dymchurch, both within half an hour’s drive.

What customers say

Setts Wood is a peaceful, picturesque getaway with plenty of space & a friendly vibe. Guests love the clean facilities, hot showers & communal kitchen, plus the farm animals (sheep, alpacas!) kids adored. Close to Tenterden. Minor notes: bin emptying & wanting more showers.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Great little camp site nice and relaxed.

We camped for 2 days to take Little ones camping

Was able to do a bit of fishing didn't catch anything but little one loved it

Owners very quick to answer our questions and went above and beyond when one of our party's blow up bed got a hole in, we asked for some duct tape but they sorted out a pull out bed for the night

Toilets were nice and clean and being able to charge phone in the kitchen was great

The alpaca and sheep wandering around was a big hit for the kids

Disliked Nothing at all

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Great location - just up the road from the nearest town. Beautiful sky at night, very little light pollution. 10pm music switch off is great. We had pitched next to our family in a bell tent with no issues. Owner very friendly (and lovely dog!). Lots of free roaming animals, and the bell tents were all well spaced apart.

Disliked In the bell tent field, there was only one composting toilet with no lighting. The other toilets were much further away. Only one shower unit for the entire site. We decided to shower at home, as we only stayed for the one night. Ground was very uneven, so you need to watch your step. For glamping - I think facilities need to be improved.

Bell tent

Liked The Bell Tent was really lovely, and the site was really well spaced out. The Animals were really nice to have around too, as was the fire pit with metal grid on top and box with utensils etc for cooking.

Disliked Distance from our bell tent to the flushing toilets was a little far when it got dark, as the ground is pretty uneven. The one compost toilet near the bell tents was helpful but no lighting at night so you needed to be pretty brave to chance it. And it definitely wouldn't be everyone's cup of tea. A couple of flushing toilets nearer the bell tents would be fab.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Spacious site with sheep and llamas grazing peacefully. Liked the no noise rule after 10p.m. as this was a busy summer weekend and there were lots of campers. Liked that could pitch camp wherever we wanted. Great location within easy reach of sandy beaches and places of interest.

Disliked Just one shower for a large group of campers seemed insufficient although in in fact we didn't need to queue for long. The toilet near our pitch was dirty.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked We had a great time at this campsite! The setting was beautiful — peaceful, with plenty of natural scenery and space to relax. One of the highlights was definitely the farm animals and star gazing at night.

The shared kitchen facilities were also a plus.

Disliked The only downside was the toilet facilities. Unfortunately, they weren’t restocked or cleaned as often as needed, especially during busy periods. There was also only one shower so the queue to use it was long It didn’t ruin the experience, but it was noticeable.

Local attractions

Join the steam railway at Tenterden (five minutes' drive) or Romney Marsh (20 minutes) and stop off at a reel of historic towns. Find your end destination in Hastings (45 minutes), where you can visit the underground tunnels of smugglers' old haunts, roam the ruins of an 11th-century Norman castle or stay in the modern-day with a stroll along the amusement pier. Play like royalty in more turrets and ruins, including Bodiam Castle (25 minutes), Sissinghurst Castle (20 minutes) and Leeds Castle (35 minutes). Or perhaps turn towards the historic towns of Tenterden (five minutes) and Rye (20 minutes) or the landscaped gardens at the fanciful Hole Park (15 minutes) and Great Dixter House & Gardens (25 minutes). Smallhythe Place (10 minutes) is another enticing site, with a 16th-century cottage that was once the home of a famous actress. Red or white? Let your tastebuds decide at local vineyards including Chapel Down Tenterden Vineyard Park (15 minutes), Gusbourne Estate Vineyard (10 minutes) and Biddenden (15 minutes). If the animals on site have you craving more, Port Lympne Safari Park (half an hour) should fit the bill.
