A summer day

  • Low-key farm site surrounded by orchards and woodlands
  • A 10-minute drive from Canterbury; Whitstable 20 minutes
  • Fresh home-grown produce sold on site; just off the A2
The people who run Worcesters describe it as ‘a little slice of heaven’ – and if you like a combination of Kentish countryside, farm animals and fresh local produce, plus easy access to the coast, you could easily end up sharing that opinion. Worcesters is located just off the A2 road, 10 minutes’ drive outside of Canterbury and 20 minutes from the coast at Whitstable. There’s a lot of greenery around, since the site is set among old Worcester Pearmain orchards and is adjacent to an area of ancient woodland. The trees will be your friends here, whether you fancy a cool afternoon nap in a hammock under their leafy canopy, or want to teach the kids how to build a den. This is a dog-friendly site that’s home to several other animals, including free-range hens, geese, goats and pigs. Fresh home-grown produce will be available depending on the time of year you visit, with eggs, bacon, sausages, tomatoes and salads frequently in stock. For cooking, open fires and barbecues are allowed in the designated areas. Worcesters has very basic amenities, including a fresh-water standpipe and a simple composting toilet. A shower and washing machine may be available in your hosts’ house by arrangement.

Primitive grass travel trailer campsite

Liked: We loved this site, it is back to basics which is what we love. It was great to have a fire pit and for the sky to be so dark at night we could see an abundance of stars. We would definitely go back again for another evening of relaxing and nature.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: The setting is stunning. We camped next to apple trees laden with bright red Worcester's apples, the juice from which was available to buy at at a very reasonable price. Love;y walks and a real forest for children to encounter a friendly Gruffalo. Super friendly owners. Very dog friendly.

Disliked: A little more investment needed with toilets - great principle though.
More washing up facilities.

Local attractions

A lively university city, Canterbury is home to a splendid cathedral with a rather gruesome past, having been the site of the murder of Archbishop Thomas Becket in 1170. The Beaney House of Art & Knowledge displays objects of local interest – from pilgrim metal badges and stuffed animals, to paintings and Rupert Bear annuals. Famous for its oysters, which you can sample in several of its restaurants, Whitstable is a pretty seaside town with a pebbly beach and a bustling high street lined with independent shops and eateries. Check out the crafts for sale at Harbour Market Whitstable before going on a boat trip to see the seals or the Maunsell Sea Forts, just off the coast. Fun and art have made Margate (35 minutes) a popular destination. For the former, head to Dreamland, a revamped amusement park with vintage rides and a lively programme of music concerts. If you’re after art, the Turner Contemporary and the Carl Freedman Gallery host rotating exhibitions. And then there’s Margate Sands, with a tidal swimming pool and children’s games.
