  • Hedge-lined four-acre park with views over Martin Down Nature Reserve
  • A 10-minute drive to the New Forest and 30 to Bournemouth beach
  • Kitchen, ping pong, art classes, bushcraft sessions and guided walks
Zip around a trio of counties on a trip to Maple Field Camping, in the north-west corner of Hampshire and on the border with Dorset and Wiltshire. Stays here are in a four-acre field surrounded by tree hedges, about a mile from the main A354 road and 10 minutes’ drive from Fordingbridge. The views are as snazzy as the location – look out from the top of the field over the chalk grasslands of Martin Down Nature Reserve by day, then turn to the heavens and admire the inky black skies while listening to the crackle of the communal firepit at night. While it may seem a hol here’s just about relaxing in the wilds and nothing more, this isn’t strictly the case – the middle of the field’s kept clear so kids can run wild, and activities include guided walks and art classes. Bushcraft sessions, where attendees craft spoons from sycamore, build dens and conjure up fires, are organised as well. Ping pong sessions are also on hand, as are tables where kids can create arty masterpieces. A spacious timber barn at the park contains toilets and showers, and a kitchen is also available to use, with kettle, fridges and freezers – a handy place to prep produce plucked from the site's veg garden. In your free time, rove the Roman road on the parish boundary and see the polished flints and shoots of wild garlic they left behind. Wanders are also to be had in The New Forest, 10 minutes’ drive away, and across the sandy beaches of Bournemouth (half an hour).

Local attractions

Forge a path to Fordingbridge (10 minutes' drive), the northern gateway to the New Forest, to tramp across the Georgian stone bridge over the River Avon or step things up a notch at the waterpark with a bit of paddleboarding, kayaking and wakeboarding. For a bit more getting wet, swims and paddles on Bournemouth beach are half an hour away (or 45 minutes on the X3 bus), while Dorset’s Lulworth Cove – a site famed on social media for its particularly scenic stretch of sand – is an hour’s drive. Durdle Door's worth dropping by around here as well (55 minutes) to snap pics of its natural stone arch while on a cliffside wander along the chalky-white coast. To continue in a more sedate vein, slope over to Salisbury (20 minutes): this city houses the tallest spire in Christendom, a functioning 14th-century clock and an original Magna Carta copy in its cathedral.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Zero

Disliked: Campsite owner Nigel cancelled on day I was meant to arrive, sadly due to ill health. Didn’t get to stay on campsite and had to quickly find alternative after long day hike … Bake Farm at Coombe Bissett which was excellent.
Still awaiting reimbursement from Maple Field in spite of numerous emails!

Liked: It was a small field full of beautiful buttercups. Everyone staying there was friendly and polite. There was a kettle and small kitchen, which were really useful.

Disliked: Only one toilet meant a bit of a queue in the morning but it was clean.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Nice location although couldnt see any signs from road. Owner picked up phone straight away, and very helpful with instruction of where to go. Large field so plenty of space., and coukd pick our own area. Kitchen area inside for washing up.
Email with instructions received before arrival, to find own pitch, plenty to pick from.

Disliked: Showers were chilly, not very powerful at all and doors didn't lock.
