You don’t have to be a bookworm to stay at Readers Field Glamping, a peaceful pop-up site in the Essex countryside, on the outskirts of the village of Great Sampford (just under a mile) and a 15-minute drive east of Saffron Walden. In a six-acre field, bell tents are kitted out with a comfortable double mattress (plus blow-up mattresses), all bed linen, pillows and duvets. Each tent has its own outdoor table and seating area – an excellent spot to take in the views, read a few chapters of a book, spot the local wildlife (from foxes and roe deer, to buzzards and red kites) or prepare a family meal in the firepit (provided). Other amenities include a cool box with two ice packs, a gas cooker (not to be used inside the tent) and a water container, plus all (or most) of the tools needed to whip up a meal: chopping boards, knives, pots and pans, cutlery and barbecue utensils… Plus a kettle, of course, and the necessary bits to brew a nice cuppa. What isn’t included is coal for the barbecue, so if you want to grill a few sausages, stock up at the supermarket in Saffron Walden. The nearest pub serving food is in the village, a 20-minute stroll away. In a separate cabin on site are the toilet/shower facilities, a communal fridge freezer and a few board games. The helpful owners will gladly share their tips on hiking and cycling routes, and places to visit.
