Beer garden with a playset

  • Family-friendly camping pitches at a pub in the Sussex countryside
  • In the village of Arlington, 25 minutes’ drive from Eastbourne
  • Beer garden with a play area on site; dog-friendly area in the pub
What could be better than pitching your tent in the green East Sussex countryside and knowing you’re within 20 minutes’ drive of beaches? Well, perhaps all of that plus staying next to a cosy pub with delicious homemade pub classics and an excellent selection of drinks. And that's exactly the setup at Sussex Camping, in the historic village of Arlington. Park your vehicle in the pub car park and stroll 200 metres to the peaceful one-acre camping field through the pub's beer garden. The beer garden, which is connected to the field by a gate, has a play area and plenty of tables for alfresco dining. Inside the pub, there’s a designated area for groups with dogs that can be reserved (as Sussex Camping is handily dog-friendly) – and guests get a 10% discount on food and drinks (just what you need after a busy day out). This is a rural retreat, as you’ll see from the views of peaceful fields, and yet it’s a short drive to the beaches in Seaford (20 minutes) and Eastbourne (25 minutes). Walkers have plenty of places to give their boots a workout, including the Vanguard Way (half an hour’s walk away in Berwick) and the Cuckmere Pilgrim Path (accessible from Arlington). Abbot’s Wood is 20 minutes’ walk away, and gorgeous Arlington Reservoir is 25 minutes’ walk away. Cyclists can head to the cycle path from Polegate (10 minutes’ drive) to Lewes too. Life in the camping field is fairly simple, with just portable toilets on the facilities front, but you'll also have access to the pub's amenities.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Super cute wee area. Simple but perfect. There was only one other tent and family when we were there so it was very quiet and lovely. The pub is so lovely and is only a minute walk from the campsite.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Fab campsite - perfect for what we wanted

Disliked Portaloo was quite smelly but otherwise clean (it is August and has been warm, so not too surprising!)
Wheelbarrow is a fab touch as not park to pitch however could do with some more air in the tyre!

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked A charming and peaceful spot in a tiny village, just steps away from a friendly, character-filled pub. The only slight drawback is the absence of a proper bathroom, and portable toilet that isn’t exactly fragrant, but is spotless and regularly cleaned. When the pub is open, guests can use the indoor toilets. There’s also a sink with running water on-site. A wonderful place for anyone craving peace, quiet, and a slower pace of life.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked The quietness, the pub grub, the friendliness of the staff, the simple, clean amenities and big field for camping in. Great for a small child and dog, the pub even had a small play bit for the child. Beer garden was beautiful. Wheelbarrow was provided to get your stuff to the camping field from the car park. (Car park was big, protected by hedges)

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Food in pub.
Location for walks / bike ride.

My friend and I stayed for one night. Unfortunately it is not mentioned that you cannot park your car next to your tent and have to carry all your equipment from the pub car park, through the beer garden, to your pitch. No offer of wheelbarrow / pull along. Lots of trips for some fellow campers.
The food was good at the pub but they closed at 9.45 on a Friday night! Early night for us. The site was an un-mowed field. Bar staff not particularly friendly or helpful.

Disliked Not being able to park your car next to your tent (no mention on blurb) hence carry all your equipment from the pub car park, through the beer garden, to your pitch. No offer of wheelbarrow / pull along.
