  • Peaceful back to basics site on a working Lancashire farm
  • On the edge of Belthorn village; short walk from pubs and a farm shop
  • Gorgeous views and plenty of local walks; dogs welcome on site
Fabulous rural views, stunning sunsets and tons of fresh air… it’s all about the simple pleasures of life at Greystones Farm - Pendle View. Settle in at this small farm site and you’ll be in for a real rural experience, bedding down between fields of sheep and cows and looking out over miles of lovely Lancashire countryside. Based on open farm field at the top of Belthorn, one of the highest villages in Lancashire (approximately 300 metres above sea level), there are views for miles. Given the location, the site recommends you come prepared for all weather conditions. It’s a back to basics setup here, almost wild camping. There are very few facilities, with just a portable toilet, just how many people like it. You’ll be able to organise your pitch as you like though, parking your car there for maximum convenience and lighting a barbecue or campfire for keeping warm and/or cooking dinner. Dogs are welcome to join you for stays here, too, and there are plenty of nearby footpaths and bridleways where they can have a good walk (as can human guests, of course…) Although the views here are very much full-on countryside, it’s handy to note that the farm is in fact on the edge of the aforementioned village of Belthorn, a small and friendly place with a farm shop and a couple of pubs and restaurants for those times when you fancy eating out (or the weather dictates an indoor evening…) There’s also a bus stop in the village with services heading into Blackburn (15 minutes’ drive away) for more extensive shopping and eating options.

Primitive grass travel trailer campsite

Liked: Stunning views and very helpful owners. The site was waterlogged so they kindly offered me one of their farm fields to stay in. No facilities which wasn't a problem. Easy communication with them.

Liked: Beautiful views, a lovely place to go if you prefer back to basics camping (which I do). No ehu or water on actual site but you can get water from the farm if required.
Minimal light pollution at night perfect for star gazing around a campfire.

Primitive grass travel trailer campsite

Liked: Another chilled, relaxed overnighter.
Plenty of spaces to choose from , but I kept the van towards the entrance this time keeping one eye on the weather. Approx 4 other campers on site when I was there.
Heavy rain was forecast, but it wasn’t too bad at all. Very windy though, but to be expected being high & exposed.
Some great walks nearby around Pickup Bank Reservoir.

Disliked: Didn’t use the PortaLoo this time ( I have an emergency loo in the van) as it was waiting to be replaced. No big deal.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: The affordability and the remote location make this a great get away for just getting some space.

The owners are also helpful and friendly.

Disliked: Unfortunately the slope of the field does control how you pitch your tent but due to weather conditions it’s necessary as our visit has some of the heaviest rain of the year and the ground rapidly becomes boggy.

There is a portaloo and there was a notice apologising for its state as the company that deals with it hadn’t cleaned it. This is not their fault but it is noted. There was no soap.

Local attractions

Getting out for a walk or a bike ride is often the prime activity that draws people to this part of the world – and there are plenty of great places to do either, including Pendle Hill (half an hour’s drive), Witton Country Park (15 minutes) or Brockholes nature reserve (20 minutes). There’s also the option of heading north into the Forest of Bowland Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (half an hour) for a longer hike if you like. Mixing in a bit of history and culture should be easy enough too – perhaps a tour of the Tiffany glass collection at Haworth Art Gallery (15 minutes), a trip to see the black and white design of Samlesbury Hall (20 minutes) or a wander around the grand National Trust - Gawthorpe Hall (20 minutes). If the kids are keen to see more animals, take them along to meet pigs, feed lambs and walk with wallabies at Mrs Dowsons Farm Park (20 minutes) or set off to see a flying demonstration at the Owl & Bird of Prey Sanctuary (25 minutes). Meanwhile, if you’re on a grownup break, you may prefer to sort a gin experience at Brindle Distillery (15 minutes).
