Shepherd's hut and pod
Evening at the huts

  • Glamping in the grounds of a 14th-century stately home
  • Shepherd's huts with ensuite bathrooms, heating and proper beds
  • Heritage café with ice cream; large playground on site
Smart shepherd’s huts in the grounds of a stately home – how splendid. If you’ve ever fancied having the run of a huge country estate, take a look at these posh pads in a peaceful corner of the gardens at Samlesbury Hall, a gorgeous half-timbered medieval hall in the Lancashire countryside halfway between Preston and Blackburn. As befits such stately surrounds, these handcrafted huts have all mod cons for a comfy stay: memory foam mattresses on the beds, a kettle for morning cuppas, and low-wattage plug sockets and USB ports to keep gadgets charged. The huts are heated to keep you cosy on chilly nights, and there are lanterns and a firepit for alfresco eves. Each hut also has an ensuite bathroom with a hot shower and towels provided. You’ll pretty much have the run of the grounds here, so there’s plenty of space for the kids to roam about and play games; there’s also an excellent Mayflower-themed wooden playground at their disposal. The heritage café serves up top-notch breakfasts and daytime meals. Smores kits, disposable barbecues and logs are all also available at reception when it is open. When you fancy heading out, it’s 15 minutes or so to drive to Preston or Blackburn, or you can wait at the bus stop outside the site and wait to be whisked into town.

What customers say

Great spot, clean, cozy huts, good facilities. Kids loved the play area, cafe/wafflery a hit. Staff friendly but some found the site tricky to find at night & had minor issues with service/cost.

Shepherd's hut

Liked He hall and the grounds - perfect for families. Very clean inside huts and the grounds which are well kept.

Disliked There were a few things not considered, we were in hut 1 which shared an external space with hut 2 & 3. On both nights when we returned to the hut another family from either hut 2 or 3 were using the only outside seating (picnic table). Which meant we, a family of four, had to be inside on the bed the entire evening after dark whilst the other families enjoyed the outside space due to the hot weather. There was no bathroom mat and with laminate bathroom floor this meant it would be super slippy so had to use one of the towels on the floor. There was only a tiny bathroom bin so had to hang up a spare plastic bag to use as a bin and then empty in the outside bin every morning. There is zero space for storage so everything had to live on the floor.

Shepherd's hut

Liked Beautiful location, fantastic shephard huts with comfortable double bunk bed and shower room. Picnic bench to eat at. Fire pit for cooler evening time. Great playground for children. Hall and gardens are lovely and the Garden room for breakfast was delicious.

Disliked No hot water - we should have called the number provided in case of problems but ran out of time before checking out. I am certain it would have been sorted by the reception team given the chance.

Shepherd's hut

Liked Comfy beds, good shower, lovely and warm, excellent WiFi, quiet location. Very friendly team.

Disliked Hard to find in the dark! Nowhere to prepare food or wash up (cafe, wafflery etc all closed Monday). Lack of storage in hut. Pricey on site food options.

Shepherd's hut

Liked Me and my son had a great time staying in a Shepherd Hut. Played games and roasted marshmallows on the fire. The hut was super warm...even with frost on the ground in the morning. Popped to the heritage cafe for breakfast...as well as a couple of games of crazy golf before leaving. Would definitely recommend.

Local attractions

The obvious place to start is right on site: the hall and grounds are open most of the week for poking around in (although do check for weddings or other functions taking place before you wander in). Free tours can be had on Sundays, to learn about the hall’s history, its witching links and some of its ghostly goings on. Clitheroe (20 minutes' drive), a market town with a castle, makes a great day out too, while it's roughly three quarters of an hour to Skipton in the Yorkshire Dales or to the southern Lakes. Should the nippers be tiring of cultural pursuits, Preston is 15 minutes away for shopping and various entertainments, or you can get to Blackpool’s beach in around half an hour. If you’d rather take in a bit more nature, plenty of walking trails are three miles away at Brockholes nature reserve, which is also a starting point for the 21-mile Preston Guild Wheel cycle route.
