  • Peaceful site in 11 acres of a working pine and deciduous woodland
  • Surrounded by walking trails and a 40-minute bus ride from Manchester
  • Pub, café, takeaway and shop within a 10-minute walk
Would you dearly love to spend some time in the woods? If you would, take a look at Lancashire’s Dearden Wood, a 10-minute walk from the little village of Edenfield and a 20-minute drive north of Bury. Guests here (four-legged ones welcome too) can start their rural rambles with explores of the 11 acres of mature pine and deciduous woodland around the site, then set their sights a little further afield on the footpaths and cycleways through the surrounds or from nearby Ramsbottom and Rawtenstall (both of which also have a fine collection of places for post-hike pints and food). If you'd rather stagger back to site for sustenance, there’s plenty of space for a barbie, and a washing-up area to get your kit clean afterwards. Edenfield’s a good source of eats too: fuel up for the day with a cooked breakfast or croissant from the café or bakery, pick up a takeaway or settle in for a cosy evening in the pub. Fingers crossed, such peaceful surrounds lead to deep slumbers – with that end in mind, the owners have kept facilities to the basics, simply installing a couple of toilets and a shower rather than kitting the place out with unnecessary distractions.

Primitive cement/asphalt campervan campsite

Liked: Really nice small site, short walk to the lovely river and amazing views.
The welcome we received was second to none and very informative with a real passion for the business.
Price for what you get was brilliant.
Toilets clean, great indoor washing facilities.

Disliked: Disliked nothing about the actual campsite, unfortunately you cannot pick the clientele.
The van across from us, turned up and started drinking straight away, then went out driving at 9pm !! Literally did not shut up from 3pm until gone 2am, smoking weed and just being the loudest people in the entire world.
The worst part about this though was that they absolutely trashed the woodland and trees next to the vans (private cordoned part) for firewood. Spent from 7pm until 2am smashing, sawing and burning your trees.
Obviously the owners cannot police the site at night and I don't blame them for this.

From the manager: Hi Adam, thanks so much for your review and really glad that you loved the site and your welcome 🥰

I can only apologise for the experience you have had with some other customers. We generally have a lovely bunch of quiet people on site and very rarely have this problem. We categorically do not allow recreational drugs on site and also do not appreciate people chopping down our woodland for firewood. We have spent many years regenerating and replanting saplings, which is why we have areas of our woods not open to the public.

I have left you a voicemail and hope to catch up with you regarding this soon. I can then investigate things further.

Liked: We stayed at Dearden Wood for the weekend and had a fantastic experience. From the moment we arrived, we were given a warm welcome at this small, peaceful, and family-friendly site. The atmosphere was incredibly relaxed and inviting—perfect for a weekend escape.

One of the highlights was the Friday night pizzas, which were absolutely delicious and served in a lovely communal setting with the local community. It was a great way to start the weekend and connect with others.

Another great feature is the beautiful waterfall and plunge pool within walking distance—perfect for a refreshing dip and a bit of adventure in nature.

The owners and staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful throughout our stay, making us feel right at home. We’ll definitely be coming back!

Liked: Great location, very nice and friendly owners

Disliked: Not the place to park if you don’t get on with wood smoke or bbqs. No grey waste

From the manager: Hi Paul, thanks for your review, really glad you enjoyed your stay.

Thankfully, with us not being a commercial site, we can offer families the opportunity to enjoy time outside around a campfire and we encourage people to cook outside in nature. We feel it encourages children to come away from screens and technology and partners to spend much needed time with eachother in our busy lives. We know it's not for everyone, but hopefully it didn't impact your stay too much 😊

Our facilities are different again to your commercial sites, they are basic and provide customers with what they need and we keep them nice and clean 😊

We value our customers and always provide the best customer service that we can do as a small business, we individually check people in between working ours and enjoy taking time to chat with our customers too.

Hopefully see you again soon!

Primitive cement/asphalt campervan campsite

Liked: Lovely little site, surrounded by woodland, It must be beautiful in the summer.

The owners were lovely and super helpful, they kept in contact with us and they kept us stocked up on logs which was great. Especially when they showed us the round house with a tarp roof and fire pit, loved it.

The road leading in is super bumpy and narrow but, expected for the location.

Fire pits placed on the good sized pitches, bags of logs are £10 but, you get plenty in them.

We were the only people on site which isn't uncommon for the time of year and we got to enjoy the place to ourselves. Decent walks not too far of a drive away.

A bit weird that 4/5 cars kept pulling in, leaving and returning at different times of the day and weren't staying. Maybe people are allowed to park for walks etc, not sure.

The 2 toilets and shower were absolutely immaculate. There's a place with a kettle, toaster, fridge and microwave to use.

I bet it's a beautiful place in the spring and summer months and I can imagine it being a very popular place to camp.

Our advice, bring decent torches, it's super dark which means beautiful night skies. Overall, a cracking little site that we will definitely be back to.

Disliked: Random cars pulling in, leaving, coming back etc. Ground was a bit difficult to walk on without boots but, could absolutely see that the owners were doing work on the site. We came off season so no surprise that work is being done on the site. And also, maybe I need to give up the crocs 🙃.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Hi Christine, thankyou for your review and really glad that you enjoyed your time with us 🥰

Yes, out of season is our maintenance time, so we are currently resurfacing the site and putting new drainage in to keep things as dry as possible for our customers during our lovely English summers 😅

The cars that were on site were some other customers (veterans) that have got a group of cadets that are coming to do D of E and they have to plan out the route across the moorlands for the cadets to make sure the route is safe and passable for them ☺️

Hope you had a safe journey back and hopefully see you again soon 😊

Primitive cement/asphalt campervan campsite

Liked: Stunning location - feels totally remote! We loved the authentic, natural, off-grid feel of the campsite; it’s simplistic yet meets all your needs! The communal wash room has a fridge, kettle, toaster and microwave which was great, and the water from the shower/sink was lovely and hot. We spotted lots of deer (literally just next to where we were parked up), and some owls/birds of prey, too - such a bonus! There aren’t “activities” for little ones to do as such, but it’s just not that type of site; they’ll love the surroundings and make their own fun with sticks and mud!

Disliked: The fact that we only booked one night - we would’ve loved to have stayed!

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thankyou for your lovely review Mary! So glad you all enjoyed your stay. We try our best to keep our site simple as we love to see families exploring and having time away from screens, normal life stresses and actually spending quality time together ❤️ hopefully see you again soon, Jessy

Primitive cement/asphalt campervan campsite

Liked: This site was fantastic, it had everything you needed, the fire pit area was amazing facility to use. And it is set in a delightful woodland.

On our first day, we saw dear, and experienced a stunning walk to the waterfall and into the village.

If you eat at the local pub ‘The Coaches’ and inform them of your stay, they provide discount, the food was amazing, the community so friendly and welcoming. (10mins walk down the hill)

Great access to amazing walk on the moorlands, the owners are so welcoming and attentive to everything you need.

Fire pit provided and wood £10 a bag, but it more than you need we stayed 2nights.

Very clean, and can only imagine in summer moths it would be so fun for families and logs, supper dog friendly.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thanks Nadine, we really appreciate your review 😊 glad you enjoyed your time with us and we agree, the food and people at the coach are fab! We try and all support local business within our small village, so its nice to have that community here!

Hopefully see you all again soon, Jessy

Primitive cement/asphalt campervan campsite

Liked: Small site tucked away. Very peaceful night with everything I needed. I arrived early but was very kindly let in by a lovely lady who came up 1 hour before check in (thank you!) after I rang to check if I was in the right place...I had gone too far past the site, I said I would wait no problem but she said it was fine and she would be up in 10, very much appreciated, thank you. The site was very clean as was the Toilet and washing room, head torch needed to go to these in the night. A great little stop over and would use again.

Disliked: Nothing regarding the site, the road in is abit rough so care needed but not a problem really- unless you go too far up...now that is rough! But that was my fault entirely

Local attractions

Walks in these surrounds are fab, but they're not the only way to get out and about. Those who like to take it all in on two wheels may like to mount their mountain bikes for the short (but steep) ride to Rossendale Moor to get their kicks on the quarry trails. Rossendale (10 minutes' drive) is also the place for climbing walls, laser tag and a roller rink at the Adrenaline Centre. Something a little less hair raising? Take it easy on the East Lancashire Railway, which rides through Ramsbottom and Rawtenstall (both 10 minutes' drive) as it puffs its way around the Irwell Valley. Check out their schedule for details of special journeys including ale rail, dino-themed days, photography courses and the like. More of an appetite for all things that move? Take in buses, trams and a vintage fire engine at Bury Transport Museum (20 minutes) – as a bonus, it's completely free to visit. If you need a reminder of urban life, flag down a bus in the village for the 40-minute journey to Manchester’s museums, shops and theatres. Rather stick to the rural stuff, ta? Meet the menagerie at Cronkshaw Fold Farm (15 minutes' drive) or Animal Quackers (20 minutes), or saddle up for a day out on horseback from the riding centre in Holcombe (15 minutes).
