Ullswater view

  • Wild camping with spectacular views of Ullswater in the Lake District
  • Pooley Bridge five minutes’ drive, and Lowther Castle 20 minutes
  • Spring water and portable toilets on site; pub 10 minutes’ walk
When it comes to the Lake District, there are many spectacular views, but the one from Ullswater View Campsite is right up there as a serious contender for a prize. The name gives it away somewhat, as this off-grid, wild camping site does indeed have spectacular views over Ullswater Lake and the surrounding forested mountains. At 20 minutes’ drive from the shops of Penrith in Cumbria, this is a spot to really get back to basics; portable toilets, rubbish bins and water from a natural spring are the only facilities you’ll find on site – so at this juncture please note that means no showers and no electricity. Part of the mown camping field is on an incline (all the better to admire those lake views), and due to the angle of the entrance gateway, you’ll need to drive up the lane and turn around before entering the site. The track leading to the pitches is not accessible to low-slung cars either. Having said all that, the site does have a wonderful setting, it’s dog-friendly (as long as your four-legged pal is kept on a lead), and it’s 10 minutes’ scenic walk from a cosy pub serving good food and beer. Staying here also puts you a handy five minutes’ drive from all the sporting action on Ullswater itself. There are firepits for hire and logs for sale on site if you'd like to spend the eve around a fire.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Location, easy access to Ullswater activities, description of how to access campsite, views of the lake, not specific check-in and check-out times, price, lots of space to pitch, on a hill yet plenty of nearly level pitches, being able to have a camp fire

Disliked Toilets needed more cleaning and checks
Noises from many pitches continued after midnight, loud music, inconsiderate drunken people and cars driving too fast on the campsite and even late at night.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Lovely site, the girl was really friendly and helpful. Nice view of the hills and lake. Plenty of space, wasn't over crowded like some other sites in the area.

Disliked Could do with a couple more toilets and cleaned more frequently when busy.
No access to the lake nearby, but staff recommended somewhere to park.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked The views were amazing, wherever you pitched up you are close by to the toilet facilities. Sophie the host was amazing, was very helpful and always up for a chat whenever she was checking in, and always making sure the toilets were stocked and cleaned,
Really close to the lake and the brackenrigg pub only 5 minute walk down the road very welcoming. Would 100% recommend and definitely be coming back soon, close to the towns great location.

Thank you
Jack and Alicia :)

Local attractions

Drive down to Pooley Bridge (five minutes by car) at the head of Ullswater for yomps along the Ullswater Way encircling the lake. Father south, stop off at the National Trust car park (10 minutes) and walk up to the impressive Aira Force Waterfall, inspiration for the poem ‘The Somnambulist’ by William Wordsworth, written in 1833. Experienced hikers may care to drive to Patterdale (15 minutes) and clamber up Helvellyn for spectacular Lake District views, while others may settle for a stately voyage around Ullswater aboard the historic steamboat ‘Lady of the Lake’ from Glenridding (15 minutes), itself a pretty lakeside village with tea rooms and souvenir shops. Lowther Castle and Gardens (20 minutes) has imposing and photogenic ruins of a massive mansion as well as parterres and parkland to wander, or you can buy marmalade – reputed to be the best in the world – at Dalemain Historic Mansion and Gardens. If you hit a rainy day, catch a film at Rheged (both 10 minutes).
