  • Family-friendly site on a family-run working farm a mile from Orton
  • Between the Yorkshire Dales and Lake District; close to the C2C route
  • A five-minute drive from the M6 and Tebay services/farm shop
Moor House Farm Camping is a simple campsite on a large family-run working farm in the Cumbria countryside, just under a mile from the pretty village of Orton. It’s the kind of location that’s likely to win lots of fans: look out over gorgeous views of the Howgill Fells while on site, then easily get out to the village for a pub (a proper country pub with real ales, meals and takeaways), a café, a well-stocked village shop, a play area and a chocolate-maker, plus a farmers’ market (every second Saturday of the month). Orton’s also on the famed Coast to Coast route, so this farm makes a good stopover point for long-distance travellers as well as those who’d like to sample a smaller section. There are peaceful walks and bike rides to be had all around, with the Lake District National Park on one side and the Yorkshire Dales on the other. There’s plenty of space to relax on the farm, where you can watch the cows and sheep grazing in neighbouring fields. (Please note that life on a working farm does come with a bit of noise from various bits of machinery and the occasional ‘country smell’…) Facilities at this site include showers, a toilet block with hot washbasins, hand dryers and an outdoor washing-up area. Electricity for the shower block is provided by an on-site wind turbine. This is an unlit site, so you’ll want to bring along a torch.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: This site was 10/10. Field -well kept, dry & spacious between each pitch. I highly recommend camping along the back wall towards the left corner as recommended by owners (quieter & amazing views). So many surrounding fields and walks to wander with dogs on a long line. Lots more walks we did not have time to explore. Facilities - the cleanest I have ever experienced while camping. Staff - Julie was so considerate of her campers, answering every email promptly, checking on things to make sure everything was ok, regularly checking on the toilet block cleanliness, offering an extra night's stay at last minute due to us enjoying things so much. She was quite literal her saviour when she enlisted her husband to come and rescue my partner's car battery which died due to our error of leaving car lights on to put a tent up on the dark. He came and jump started the car and rescued our mini holiday. 4g/5g available which was a major bonus. We LOVED our experience and cannot wait to return.

Disliked: Nothing - the experience was PERFECT.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Great camping field, large area. Dont think it would ever feel crowded. Beautiful view, you can see the mountains in the distance.
Great toilet/shower facilities, looks like it has been recently refurbed.
Short distance from the M6 motorway, so very easy access. You can actually see the cars/lorries passing at the distance but no noise at all. Very peaceful. Host also very kind, came to check on us on arrival even though we arrived quite late.

Disliked: Some of the areas are on a slope, but plenty of flat areas to choose from. Be there with daylight so you can choose the best spot.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Plenty of space to choose from to pitch up. Gorgeous views. Clean and tidy toilet block. It was very rainy during my stay and the owner was kind enough to open the gate on the lower part of the field so I could get out easier when I left. Looking forward to going back when it’s dryer!

From the manager: Thank you for your review of our campsite and sorry it did not live up to your expectations. We are pleased that you found us to be welcoming hosts and that you found the bathroom facilities very clean. The site is situated on a slight hill which is why we get such fabulous views. We only have 15 pitches at any one time and as the field is very large, they are plenty of suitably flat places for people to pitch up whilst avoiding any slopes. Thank you for visiting. Kind regards.

Excellent site, beautiful location. Clean and well maintained.

Liked: We have just returned home from camping at Moor House Farm on bank holiday weekend. The site was set in a beautiful location, the views were stunning and the toilets and shower facilities were extremely clean! The host was so friendly and welcoming, she came round to us a few time during our stay to make sure everything was okay which we thought was a really nice thing to do. There were some really nice walks from the site, we also visited the George Hotel for drinks on the Saturday afternoon. Overall, the site is perfect, we especially loved how quiet and peaceful it was! We will definitely be returning in the future.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: The shower block and toilet were spotless
The views are breathtaking
The host was very friendly and welcoming
Seeing all the cows :)

Disliked: It didn’t bother us at all but the farm can be a little loud early on so my only suggestion is camping at the back if you’re a light sleeper
