  • Family-friendly site on a family-run working farm a mile from Orton
  • Between the Yorkshire Dales and Lake District; close to the C2C route
  • A five-minute drive from the M6 and Tebay services/farm shop
Moor House Farm Camping is a simple campsite on a large family-run working farm in the Cumbria countryside, just under a mile from the pretty village of Orton. It’s the kind of location that’s likely to win lots of fans: look out over gorgeous views of the Howgill Fells while on site, then easily get out to the village for a pub (a proper country pub with real ales, meals and takeaways), a café, a well-stocked village shop, a play area and a chocolate-maker, plus a farmers’ market (every second Saturday of the month). Orton’s also on the famed Coast to Coast route, so this farm makes a good stopover point for long-distance travellers as well as those who’d like to sample a smaller section. There are peaceful walks and bike rides to be had all around, with the Lake District National Park on one side and the Yorkshire Dales on the other. There’s plenty of space to relax on the farm, where you can watch the cows and sheep grazing in neighbouring fields. (Please note that life on a working farm does come with a bit of noise from various bits of machinery and the occasional ‘country smell’…) Facilities at this site include showers, a toilet block with hot washbasins, hand dryers and an outdoor washing-up area. Electricity for the shower block is provided by an on-site wind turbine. This is an unlit site, so you’ll want to bring along a torch.

Moor House Farm: Peaceful, spacious farm campsite w/ stunning views. Immaculate facilities, friendly owners. Great M6 stopover, still quiet. Undulating ground & unisex facilities noted, but overall stays were very positive.

Primitive grass and earth RV campsite

Liked The site is set up on a moor with beautiful views. It was quiet when we stayed - only one other van - lovely clean toilets and showers. It was an easy walk to a great pub with food in Orton and very peaceful despite the proximity to the M6. Definitely one for a longer visit.
Great communication from the owner - very friendly and helpful 😊

Primitive grass and earth RV campsite

Liked Lovely views and soundtrack to nature. We had enough space to feel like we had our own private ‘zone’ and the site wasn’t overly packed which we have found with other sites as this can really ruin a stay and the overall privacy and tranquility. We personally had no issue with road noise in the slightest. Owner was very friendly and regularly checked the facilities to ensure they were clean and tidy.

Disliked Outside tap for washing up doesn’t have hot water and showers are basic with low pressure. Could do with a storage bench or similar in the shower as it was a little tricky to wash and change in the cubicle without everything getting wet. Sinks are communal and not in a block which again isn’t an issue but worth noting if you are looking for a little more privacy. This is a working farm and the site to pitch is a field so not the most level but this is part of the charm, just something to note that levellers would be needed for larger vehicles.

Primitive grass and earth RV campsite

Liked This campsite is great, we like the less pruned campsites - many have become large caravan parks with roads around them. Moor House Farm is easily accessible, surrounded by fields and next to a farm. As you'd expect from Cumbria it's not flat but that's one of the joys of camping, right?
The owner is lovely and the small but perfectly formed showers and toilets are kept immaculately.
It's not too far to walk to the local pub and post office (where they sell food and drink). Nice cafe in Orton too.
Walks from the site, what else do you need?

Disliked Ok, so we parked really close to the wind turbine - no problem for us as we were in a camper but our friends in tents found it a little noisy - as you'd expect. Just pick where you pitch carefully! :D

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Gorgeous location, lovely quiet site with plenty of room. Great little shower block, everything you need is there without being expensive. Super easy access to fast roads as well as being in an ideal rural location. Great advice about local walks and attractions and all emergency information provided. The family who own it are lovely, they ensure they pop to see you and are friendly and helpful without being overbearing.
The doggos enjoyed it and it was easy with so much space.
Would stay again in the blink of an eye, superb place!
