What customers say

A beautiful, peaceful site with friendly, helpful owners. Guests enjoyed spacious spots, clean facilities, and the stream, a hit with kids. Well-maintained with lovely views, it's a great base. Some noted the steep hill from parking and narrow approach roads.

Hobby Wood primitive grass tent campsite (no private bathroom amenities)

Liked Good communications from the owner prior to arrival, loads of wood for the fire, nice clean toilets well stocked with loo roll. Decent shower with space to dress. Lovely views, in a cracking location.

Disliked The exit from the track out on to the road could do with building up/ flattening a little, car loaded up with camping gear grounded out a bit on exit.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for the review, so glad you appreciated our loo rounds, it was a busy weekend, so regular cleaning was needed to keep them in tip top condition. The views are fabulous particularly on a sunny weekend, even better if you take a walk to the top of the fell.

With regard to the track, you won't realise the work we put in to enable the cars to park so near the tents, every year we rebuild the track as the Cumbrian rain loves washing it out, we add gravel and scale it back. We recommend driving slowly and keeping to the solid track, most people manage it, but we are here to help if you need it.

Hobby Wood primitive grass tent campsite (no private bathroom amenities)

Liked Beautiful location, well marked out large pitches and plenty of space. Close to visit nice places in the Lakes.

Disliked Would be nice to have more taps/sinks and some signage on the gate to the field.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your review, so glad you enjoyed the location, we try to make sure pitches are allocated so everyone has lots of space.
You attended on one of our busiest weekend, with glorious sunshine, knowing you still felt there was lots of space is reassuring.
With regard to the taps, we have one tap per 4 tents, spaced evenly along the site, I can only think everyone wanted to use these at a similar time, which is unusual.
We will try & increase these for next season.

By the Beck primitive grass tent campsite (Private restroom amenities)

Liked A very pretty and peaceful campsite, with large pitches and a super friendly owner.

I camped here with my two little boys and had a fantastic 4/5 days. They loved playing in the stream. My 3 year old loved the cows in the field next door too.

When we arrived the owner met us to help take our gear to the pitch but there were also wheelbarrows available to help move kit also. This was super easy and efficient. She checked in with us through our stay to make sure all was great.

Felt very safe for the little ones, no cars driving on site and toilet facilities super clean and nearby. Hot water for showers also! It got busier at the weekend, with a few small groups but all were very quiet and relaxed.

Local pub a lovely walk away. Plenty to do nearby for kids - we did Lakeland maze / greenlands farm & crazy golf / morecambe happy mount park.

We will absolutely be back! Thank you Puddlemire!

By the Beck primitive grass tent campsite (Private restroom amenities)

Liked Everything. Welcoming host, clean and beautiful site. Sanitary arrangements are very good. Special mention to Charlie the dog 🙂

Disliked Roads in area are not for wide cars. Imagine narrow rural/country road with 8ft hedges on both sides.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your review. You are right, the road approaching the campsite is very narrow, we suggest taking your time, checking for approaching cars and using the passing places, but on the plus side, its only a short stretch & we hope its worth it when you see the site itself.
Glad you enjoyed Charlies visit, its out of bounds for her really, but the pull of sausages & burgers on the BBQ means she does visit now & again, followed quickly by Josh to gather her up and take her back home.
Thank you for visiting, the weather was perfect for you on Friday, thanks goodness the weather was not as bad as the forecast, the fell behind seems to provide some protection and off course some fabulous views.

Alders Edge bell tent

Bijv electriciteit of andere faciliteiten.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: I have struggled fully translating this text, I can see you loved the setting, the peace & quiet and the stream.

I am sorry it seemed you expected electricity, in particular to do you washing, I cannot see this in our advertising, so I am sorry you felt misled. The lights in the bell tent will be working for our next guests, the batteries usually last well, but like anything it depends on the amount of use.

We do work hard to ensure all our guests enjoy their stay with us, the weather wasn't on your side, with torrential rain on one evening, maybe with glorious sunshine the view of our site may have been different.

Hobby Wood primitive grass tent campsite (no private bathroom amenities)

Liked Amazing customer service from the lady who runs it. She drove us down to our pitch with all our gear and back up when we were leaving. She provided ice packs and insect repellent to borrow FOC. toilets were clean and tidy, showers were warm and had soap provided incase you had forgotten your own. Sink area was great, also had a few sponges and soap incase you forgot your own. Bins are all separated for max recycling. The river that runs on the outside of the campsite is lovely. There is a pub about 15 min walk away, we didn’t go to this but it did look nice. Windermere is only 30 mins away for a prefect day out.

Disliked Nothing I’d definitely go back!

Exit the M6 at Junction 36, taking the A65 towards Kirkby Lonsdale. You will go past the Plough Hotel on your right. Take the next turn on your right-hand side (just past a layby, with a white bungalow on the corner and a signpost for Hutton Roof). Follow this road, and when it bears sharply to the left, do not turn left but carry straight on in front of the row of houses. Follow the road until you reach a T-junction and then turn right. Keep bearing right, passing Rose Cottage; the site is at the next right-hand turn.

Local attractions

Where to go first? If you want to test your aim, clay pigeon shooting could become your next hobby at Crabtree Clay Shoot (five minutes' drive; check ahead for opening days) or climb the local limestone-paved paths at Hutton Roof Crags (10 minutes’ drive). For countryside enthusiasts, the Lake District (20 minutes’ drive) and Yorkshire Dales (20 minutes) national parks each have their own draws. In the Lake District, the fells and lakes offer ample opportunities for sailing, rock climbing, or cycling. Meanwhile, in the Yorkshire Dales, you can track down waterfalls and old barns. Northwards, more walking and cycling trails await at Whitbarrow National Nature Reserve (25 minutes), this time through ancient woodlands and limestone. While you’re there, visit Sizergh Castle (15 minutes) and stroll the stately grounds and estate. If you’re longing for a sandy beach, there are long stretches of sand at Silverdale (30 minutes) and Sandside (20 minutes). Head further south and you’ll come to Morecambe (30 minutes), where another bay competes with a 12th-century castle, prison and a stroll-worthy promenade for your attention.
