  • Go Ape Grizedale 35 minutes’ drive; Predator Experience 15 minutes
  • Lake Windermere views; walks and bike rides direct from the pods
Escaping to the Lake District? Not too confident about pitching a tent? Go right ahead and book yourself into a heated wooden pod at Ghyll Head. Surrounded by peaceful woodland, the site has stunning views down to Windermere and beyond to the Lakeland Fells, with an array of walking and mountain-biking routes accessible directly from your door. Ghyll Head also sits 10 minutes’ drive from the cafés, pubs and shops of lively Bowness-on-Windermere, should you wish to mix up rural pursuits with more urban pastimes. On the inside, each camping pod is decked out with comfy single beds with mattresses, plus under-bed heating, LED lighting, plug sockets and USB charging points so you can stay in contact with the outside world. Don’t forget, however, to bring your own bedding or sleeping bags. Private outdoor picnic tables and benches sit by each pod, so you can eat al fresco and soak up the views. No need to worry about leaving all your worldly goods behind when you’re out and about exploring either, as the pods are lockable. Simple on-site facilities to make life easy for you include showers, washing-up sinks and a sheltered shared dining area.

Camping pod

Liked: The location in the woods but still only 10 mins from Bowness, the pods themselves which were perfect for the four of us (and could have accommodated 5), the under-bed heating (bliss!), our own private dining table right outside, the fact that we weren’t paying an arm and a leg to stay, entirely comfortably, in the heart of the Lakes

Disliked: These aren’t so much dislikes (we loved our stay) more minor tweaks that might make things even better:
1. Our pod (#3) was missing the blind fabric from the front door’s window. No biggie as we were able to jury rig an alternative with towels but a relatively easy fix to put right
2. A few shelves, even small ones, on the pod walls would have been useful for keys, phone, wallet etc
3. The outside bin nearer the pods was a bit small and tended to fill quickly
4. The bigger bins in the communal area weren’t clearly marked eg for cardboard, paper
5. A few signs pointing out paths from the pod site would be helpful

Camping pod

Liked: Absolutely love the pod we stayed in. It was warm, with adjustable heating; the mattresses were extremely comfortable, maybe even better than my one back home; the location was excellent, 5 minutes from the lake and 5 minutes from the hills behind the camp; the services like the toilets and kitchen were well stocked and very clean. This is an excellent stay for up to five people, for a great price and a great experience. Whether you’re a group of mates or a full on family. Just be careful about how much time you spend with eachother because you WILL end up wanting to rip one of their heads off.

Disliked: There is pretty much nothing that I disliked, there’s only two points, and they’re both not major. The mattresses didn’t have bedding so I had to bring my own (minor problem). And lastly, it was about a 40-50 minute walk to the town (again, minor, I don’t think the intention is going into a town when you go to the Lake District).

Camping pod

Liked: The pods were great, clean, warm and the beds were comfortable. Beautiful setting under the trees and the sound of the stream was lovely! Toilets and showers clean and well lit in the night. Great as a stop off stay for us on our way further up north!

Disliked: The community room could have been geared up with a few more games / things to do for the kids. There isn’t a lot of space outside of the pods so they ended up wanting to play down there.

Camping pod

Liked: Lovely pod, warm and comfy beds. Lay out of pods great, stream and nature around it lovely.

Disliked: Grounds around the pod mucky bring lots of muck and stones back into the pod, would be a good idea to have a little brush and pan in each pod. Also bathrooms became very dirty towards end of week, no toilet roll atall one morning and other toilets locked up. Very limited on hand towels to dry hands. Room with ping pong table had no light working for 2 days.

Camping pod

Liked: Comfortable mattresses, good toilet/kitchen facilities.
Peaceful camp

Disliked: Only criticism is that the small window on top bunk had no blind so our 4 year old ended up sleeping on lower bed

Local attractions

Those of you who’re keen to get active have plenty of choice. Go dinghy sailing on the lake from Windermere Outdoor Adventure Centre (10 minutes’ drive), hire a kayak to paddle around the shoreline from Windermere Canoe and Kayak (five minutes) or take care of any rainy days with a few laps of the indoor pool at Kendal Leisure Centre (25 minutes). Kids will almost certainly adore running around among the trees at Go Ape Grizedale (35 minutes) or the family-oriented obstacle courses at Treetop Trek Windermere (15 minutes). Glebe Park (10 minutes) is another clever option for sporty families, with mini golf, pitch-and-putt courses and tennis courts. If you’ve managed to wear everybody out, perhaps a quiet day is on the cards. Take the kid to bottle feed cuddly lambs at the Lakeland Farm Visitor Centre (15 minutes) – where you’ll also get a tasty locally sourced lunch. Up the animal ante with a visit to Predator Experience (15 minutes), where you can walk with majestic wolves and feed them treats.
