  • Luxury pods on a Cumbria farm overlooking the spectacular Eden Valley
  • Hardraw Force half an hour’s drive and Ullswater lake 45 minutes
  • Family-friendly site with a games field and breakfast delivery service
Small, luxurious and peaceful are the keywords at Gillcumber Glamping Pods, set on a working farm in Cumbria’s stunning Eden Valley. And once there, also at your disposal is a welcoming pub in the pretty village of Winton (10 minutes’ stroll) and plenty of shops in the market town of Kirkby Stephen (five minutes’ drive) if you need to top up supplies. And the smart pods at Gillcumber are seriously comfy, with underfloor heating, kitchenettes with electric grills and utensils, a double bed (all linens and towels are supplied) and powerful showers in the ensuite bathrooms. Each one has a small dining area and cosy living space with inviting sofas, and outside there are private gardens and covered seating areas with spectacular views over the Eden Valley. Bringing the kids? The pods sleep up to two adults and two children comfortably. There is a large paddock adjacent to the pods equipped with goal posts for a knock around with a ball and enough space for family games. Should the weather turn against you, indoor toys and classic board games are free to use. This may be a self-catering place, but fresh eggs are sold on site and you can kickstart the day further with a Cumbrian Breakfast (for a small charge) using produce from neighbouring farms and local bakeries. If you’re into alfresco cooking, firepits are for hire, while other thoughtful extras include a ‘date night’ pack of red wine and local cheeses.

Local attractions

History buffs have a choice of mighty castles to tour: the ruins of 12th-century Pendragon Castle (15 minutes’ drive) is free for all to explore, while you have a fabulous view towards Lake District National Park peaks from Kendal Castle (40 minutes’ drive). Sprawling Barnard Castle (25 minutes) sits over the Tees Gorge, with the added benefit of the Bowes Museum and its sublime art collection close by. If you fancy a day out in the Yorkshire Dales, be sure to drive through Buttertubs Pass (40 minutes), one of the most spectacular roads in the country; from there take in the awesome waterfall at Hardraw (half an hour), shop for antiques in Hawes (40 minutes) or drop by to see the endangered red squirrels at Snaizeholme Red Squirrel Sanctuary (45 minutes). Turning west, you can organise family hikes and boat trips on Ullswater, or take the kids to see cute badgers being fed at RSPB at Wild Haweswater (both 45 minutes). If more action is needed to tire out over-energetic offspring, take them quad biking at the Outdoor Activity Centre (half an hour).
