  • Spectacular scenery bordering the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales
  • Five miles from the Settle to Carlisle Railway
  • Playground on site; pool, restaurant and pub nearby
It's the Lake District – and the Yorkshire Dales – so it's pretty standard that spectacular scenery is a given from and around Augill Beck Caravan Park, five miles from the historic Cumbrian town of Kirkby Stephen. Walks and bike rides are a cinch to sort from here too, in the becks and rivers around the site and in the nearby fields and woodlands: look out for the likes of red squirrels and roe deer on your way, around the park, and its wildlife pond. Accommodation on site is in smart holiday homes, set scenically among the backdrop of the fells. All have their own bathrooms, kitchens and spacious lounges with TV, Freeview and DVD player. For supplies and eats, a small shop, a fish and chip shop and a pub serving food are all under a mile away at the village of Brough.

Local attractions

Lace up your walking boots and get ready to see some species, for this is wildlife haven and walking land. You can set off straight from the site, or drive/cycle a few miles to wander the Kirkby Stephen circular walk from town or hike up the Howgill Fells and around the Eden Valley. Further afield, the Yorkshire Dales and Lake District national parks and the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty will see you sorted too. One of the most famed attractions in this part of the country is the Settle to Carlisle Railway, steaming scenically through the countryside for 73 miles through remote and beaut parts of the Dales and the North Pennines. Hop on board at either Kirkby Stephen or nearby Appleby, then have an afternoon out at Carlisle, about 30 minutes away. A drive of about 40 minutes' drive will bring you to the southern waters of the Lake District National Park and the lakeside towns of Windermere, Ambleside and Grasmere. You could also drive up to Ullswater and the northern lakes, for steamer cruises, the market town of Keswick (once named as the UK's most dog-friendly place, pooch fans), and have a stroll in yet more scenic surroundings at Pooley Bridge. If you're an angling type, get in touch with the Kirkby Stephen & District Angling Association before you arrive, whose seasoned members can take you out on a fishing trip on the River Eden to land a clutch of wild brown trout.
