  • Working farm site in the Lake District with stunning fell views
  • Just off the A66 road in Threlkeld, a 10-minute drive from Keswick
  • Blencathra, Skiddaw and Helvellyn ranges within 20-minute drive
Looking for a lush location to settle down in while exploring Lakeland? Step foot in the family-run Setmabanning Caravan Park, then step off site towards top spots like Keswick and the Castlerigg Stone Circle (10 minutes’ drive). This site really is very easy on the eye: it’s got spectacular views of Blencathra and the surrounding fells, making it fab for frolicking about the Lake District (or just having a bit of R&R in a rural bolthole). During a break here, the more energetic among your travel crew could tackle the Blencathra, Skiddaw and Helvellyn ranges, all within about a 20-minute drive, while strollers seeking easier trails might prefer the pretty footpaths and cycle tracks around the local valley and towards Keswick. Sticking to the site is always an option too – being a working farm, there’s lots to see and do, whether it’s watching the sheep being sheared and the cows going out into the fields with their calves or feeding the chickens and ducks as they wander by. When it comes to filling your own stomach, it’s a 25-minute walk to the centre of the nearest village, Threlkeld, which has two country pubs serving Cumbrian food and ales. Meals are also to be had at the golf club, and the Threlkeld Quarry & Mining Museum (10 minutes) is worth a quick nosey around as well.

FHU gravel travel trailer campsite

Liked: Nice level pitches, EU & Water on pitch. Nice little farm shop. Short distance from A66. Also not far on public footpath to village with a couple of nice pubs serving good food. Site has basic amenities but is a working farm, which suits us.

Disliked: Unfortunately the showers are very inconsistent regard pressure and temperature, speaking to other residents they experienced the same. This applies to male and female showers it is cold and low pressure then all of a sudden so hot it is unbearable and with such force. Almost like being hit with a steam cleaner. Also there were other residents in a caravan with two dogs off lead and both came and did ther business by our pitch which in the heat was smelly although this was no fault of the farm itself.

FHU gravel travel trailer campsite

Liked: The pitches were very spacious and liked we had a little wall to separate for our neighbours.

Disliked: The showers (female's only 1 with hot water) (male's, no hot water at all)
Deffinatly need more attention to keeping them clean and only 1 chair outside the cubicle to put your stuff.

FHU gravel travel trailer campsite

Liked: Really generous sized pitches with grey waste, drinking water and electric hook up all located at the pitch.

The location on a farm is great for kids and it was great to walk up to the mining museum.

We also like the quirky to farm shop on site. Great selection of items, prices slightly higher than what we would like to pay but great addition to the site.

Lastly, the hosts were very welcoming and made us feel comfortable.

Disliked: The shower and toilet building really needs a upgrade to modern standards but I worry that would put their prices up but they really weren't acceptable to use.

Local attractions

The site is on a cycle path leading to Keswick, so you could either drive to town (10 minutes) or ride there by bike. Once you’ve arrived, have a left-of-field hour or so learning about the history of pencils at the Derwent Pencil Museum before gazing at artefacts dug up from around Lakeland in the Keswick Museum & Art Gallery. Just on the outskirts of town is the Castlerigg Stone Circle, dating back as far as the Neolithic area; check this historic spot out, then trudge up to the 2,848-foot Halls Fell Top at the peak of Blencathra. The mighty mountain ranges of Skiddaw (20 minutes’ drive) and Helvellyn (10 minutes) are also local to the site if you’re up for another hiking challenge. As you’re in the Lake District, you’ll surely want to be inspecting some of the area’s bodies of water too. The closest to Keswick is Derwent Water (15 minutes) – ace for boat trips around the Theatre by the Lake – but Thirlmere (10 minutes) and Ullswater (20 minutes) are within easy reach as well.
