  • Quiet and secluded site with spectacular views of the Lake District
  • Five-minute drive from Bassenthwaite Lake; 15 to Keswick, Cockermouth
  • Spa next door; five minutes' walk to the Lake District Wildlife Park
Could trips to Cumbria get any more spectacular than at this serene site…? Answers on a postcard please to Coalbeck Caravan Park… in a central setting for touring the Lake District and nearby coastline, this haven has views of the region’s woods, fields and hills from its spacious grounds. Getting you to linger a little longer before heading out for explores, the spacious pitches at Coalbeck Caravan Park are prime for spotting creatures like rare red squirrels among the pretty planters, and are a suntrap when the rays come out too. But if rain’s threatening? A spa next door to the site means you can book in for a treatment (or three…?). Back outdoors, the site’s a five-minute drive from Bassenthwaite Lake – one of the only bodies of water in the region with no settlements around it – so it’s got a peaceful vibe yet is close enough to many of the main sights in the northern part of the lakes. Case in point: it’s around a 15-minute drive to historic towns like Keswick and Cockermouth and about a half an hour to the coast. If you’re looking for leisure without having to get behind the wheel, Lake District Wildlife Park’s 24 acres of land home to more than 100 animals is a five-minute walk away. You’ll also need to ditch the car to visit The Lakes Distillery: this artisan gin, whisky and vodka producing place a 25-minute stroll from the park has tastings, tours and a small shop where you can wander off with some of its wares.

Liked: Neat, compact, quiet and very tidy site. The toilet and shower facilities were spotlessly clean. Sid, the owner, was very friendly and helpful and obviously works very hard to maintain the cleanliness of the toilet facilities (which are exclusive to each of the five pitches.
We stayed for two nights to do some fellwalking in Ennerdale which was quite easily and quickly reached from here. It would also make a good base for the Northern and North Western fells.

Disliked: Nothing.

Liked: Spacious pitches, clean facilities and the books on offer to guests in exchange for a donation to the local hospice charity were a nice touch. A very quiet spot with lovely views of the wildlife in the fields.

Each pitch is given it’s own dedicated toilet cubicle which is convenient.

The campsite owner Sid was friendly and helpful, ready to greet us on arrival and ensure we knew where all the facilities were based.

The campsite is based within a 5 minute walk of the Lake District Wildlife Park, well worth a visit.

Wifi worked perfectly throughout our trip and the electric hookup was easy to use.

Disliked: While each pitch has it’s own dedicated toilet facility, there is only one shower cubicle available on site which I can imagine may be trickier to access during busier parts of the year. It wasn’t a problem for us as we came during a quieter part of the season. The shower was very clean and spacious.

I’d recommend visitors bring torches as the paths from the camping pitches to the facilities are unlit at night.

Liked: Everything!
Small site which suited us 5 touring pitches. Each one has its own specific toilet in the very clean toilet block
Nice quiet site. No noise in the evenings. As your wake up there a little field about 10 metres from your door with 26 lovely sheep in.
Such a relaxing break.
We don't have a driveway awning so we jumped on the local buses.
End of the road(literally a 5 minute walk) you can catch the bus to keswick and workington.
We did both. As well as cockermouth and a little further afield Whitehaven.
Sid was very helpful and very friendly. Will 100% return when staying in the area again

Disliked: Absolutely nothing

Local attractions

For ambles around art galleries and wanders in Wordsworth House and Garden, Keswick is eight miles away. Cockermouth, on the other hand, about the same distance to the south east, is just the place for meandering through medieval and Georgian alleyways under castle walls. Or for classic Lake District outdoorsy options instead, Derwentwater's walking and cycling circuit (set aside about half a day to complete if strolling) takes half an hour to reach in the car. To break up traipsing around the tarns inland, Solway Coast Area of Natural Beauty is 40 minutes by car, while underground explores at Honister Slate Mine in Borrowdale are 45 minutes away. If you fancy staying above ground and sauntering southwards, Lake Ullswater steamer cruises are also 45 minutes from the park and Lake Windermere is the place to waterski (an hour and five minutes away from Coalbeck Caravan Park). To scale one of the region’s highest peaks, Scafell Pike takes an hour and 15 minutes to reach.
