Nice part off the site

  • In the Cumbrian hills a couple of miles from Witherslack
  • A 15-minute drive from Grange-over-Sands and 25 from Windermere
  • Campfires allowed: firepits for hire and wood for sale on site
How might you fancy a peaceful and well-equipped Lake District place to stay, among the peaceful hills of Cumbria, and with easy access to famed Lake District destinations including Lake Windermere, Ambleside, Cartmel and Kendal? Bed down at quiet and secluded Moss Howe Farm for all the above, a couple of miles from local village Witherslack and 15 minutes' drive from Grange-over-Sands. This is an excellent setting for campfire evenings: guests can arrange firepit hire by adding a request to the Moss Howe team when booking, or use their own barbecues as long as they're raised off the ground and placed on top of the firepit using the supplied grill. A shop and pub are nearby in Witherslack for supplies and other eats. Moss Howe is well equipped, with modern shower, washroom and toilet facilities, plus a tumble dryer in the ladies' shower block, and dishwashing basins just outside. Charging facilities are available for an extra fee; freshwater taps are around the accommodation areas, and wifi is at reception.

Valley View primitive grass tent or campervan campsite

Liked: The facilities, bathrooms and the staff were lovely and helpful. The croissant in the morning was great well worth it!

Disliked: Unfortunately it’s very far from any public transport, I think it’s a couple of miles walk to the closest bus stop so not ideal if you’re travelling without a car like I was. If it was better placed closer to rail or bus links it would be pretty much perfect, that said if you have your own transport it would be fine

Lodge (hot tub)

Liked: This was our second time glamping at this campsite, this time we chose the Rabbit's Burrow so we could enjoy the hot tub since it was my birthday trip. Last year in October we stayed in the Fox's Den lodge and both are perfect! We had everything we needed in the lodge and outood kitchen area as well.

They have updated the shower and toilet block and while they do look a lot better to the eye, much more modern and are kept clean, the showers have been replaced with sensor ones so you have to keep touching this little sensor button to activate the shower every 15 secs or so. I had the scare of lathering up in shower gel and then the shower wouldn't come on so I had to wrap up and run in the one next to me and that one eventually came on, luckily no one was in. I laughed about it after! They have 3 showers and 3 toilets for the ladies, big round mirrors, loo paper plenty, showers are hot enought (although I miss a removable shower head and a switch to adjust the water temp! not everyone likes super hot showers). Did the job!

The staff are lovely as always (Fiona and her dog Lola were there so we were happy to see them again). Onsite shop is well stocked and reasonably priced with everything essential you might need. They also do fresh pastries if ordered the night before and fresh coffee, too.

No food van this year due to staffing issues, however they did specify this in bold in our booking confirmation so we were made aware prior to arriving which didn't bother us.

It's one of our favourite campsites in The Lakes and we can't wait to go back. It was pretty much full when we stayed but still so quiet and everyone kept to themselves and we could enjoy the peace and quiet. Pitches seem levelled enough, some have electric hook-up too.

Plenty of lovely walks straight from the campsite and a pub not far. Laundry and fridge-freezer facitilies. Campfires allowed and the firepits can be hired from the shop (£5).

Firewood costs £6.5/bag and heat logs are £7.5, kindling+firelighters £2.5/bag.

We will certainly be back here again. Great value for money. Thank you Moss Howe team!

Disliked: New sensor showers are not great and no way to adjust the water temperature

Powered grass tent or campervan campsite (premium)

Liked: We arrived a little early but we were able to do the self check in during to the little whiteboard on the wall. We opted for a larger pitch with picnic table and firepit included. It was reasonably level, and a really good size. We didn't get to make full use of the picnic table and fire pit due to only 2 of our 4 day stay being dry. There is a little communal area undercover, but while we were there the table football was broken and out of use. Also the pizza van was not there due to staff issues.....these things can't be helped, but a bit of a shame.
The toilet and shower facilities were good, nice and clean and the water was always nice and hot.
The little shop was really good, and staff are lovely, helpful and friendly. We ordered fresh pastries and baguettes one day....worth doing, they were really good.
The evenings that we were able to sit outside were lovely, beautiful sunsets, a chilled vibe and nice and quiet at bedtime.
We were in a campervan and we were comfortable and cosy despite the weather.

Disliked: Nothing. I would just add that it is a fair way out, and there is not much to do locally without driving. This is our fault entirely though, as they do state that they are remote, and would not have been an issue at all if we'd have had good weather...as then I'd have been happy to just sit and enjoy the surroundings.

Local attractions

A particularly scenic way to explore these surroundings is atop a horse, so make your way first to the Witherslack Hall Equestrian Centre, 10 minutes' drive away, for rides through the woods or on the local fell. A big sheltered arena is also at the centre if you'd like to practise your cantering first. If horses aren't for you, take to the car instead for the spectacularly scenic 25-minute drive to Windermere and Consiton Water via the A590, among the views of the east side of the lake to Bowness, Troutbeck and Ambleside. You'll need at least a day at Britain's biggest natural water lake, for steam ferry rides from Bowness Bay to Waterhead at Ambleside, or boating trips around the water and Windermere's 18 islands. Also have a potter around Lakeside Pier at the southern end of the lake (the ferry from Bowness finishes here), for the Aquarium of the Lakes showcasing Windermere's wildlife. Hikes, mountain biking and lake and mountain views are at Grizedale Forest, 35 minutes away.
