  • Wild campsite with Peckforton Hills views at Bunbury in Cheshire
  • BeWILDerwood Cheshire 10 minutes’ drive; Chester Zoo half an hour
  • Cycling and hiking direct from the site; pub 10 minutes' walk away
Steve, Alex and the family look forward to welcoming you for a taste of wild camping at Whitegate Farm Camping. Set on a smallholding on the outskirts of the pretty village of Bunbury in Cheshire, this quiet, family- and dog-friendly spot has Peckforton Hills views from the camping field – and Phoebe the friendly llama as your new neighbour. The family-run site is in the Cheshire countryside, 10 minutes' drive from Tarporley, and just a 10-minute walk to the local pub and shop. This is a lovely peaceful spot with lots of privacy, but all the same, it's under half an hour's drive away from many of Chester's popular attractions, including Chester Zoo, The Ice Cream Farm and Wild Shore Delamere. Simple on-site facilities stretch to loos and a shower, and be forewarned that there is no electricity on site; bring torches for any nocturnal wanderings about the place. What you do get, however, are loads of walks and bike rides straight from the campsite, to Beeston Castle (45 minutes on foot) or along The Sandstone Trail (50 minutes). You can take the kids on easy family strolls or cycles alongside the Shropshire Union Canal Main Line towpath (10 minutes’ drive), or have a meander down to the three local pubs within 20 minutes’ walk for a choice of good food and a decent pint or two.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Gorgeous site, we loved the pitches mowed into the meadow so it felt like we had our own little space.

Owners were lovely and helpful, toilet & showers were super clean, the whole site is so neat and tidy.

The kids (4 & 11) loved the space and enjoyed flying kites, playing games, building dens, & we went to the Bickerton Poacher for lunch and for them to play on the park. We all enjoyed watching the sunsets and stargazing!

Would definitely come back!

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked A beautiful campsite with large pitches. We received a warm welcome and were able to be pitched next to the rest of our family. The facilities were clean. There’s a lovely pub for food only ten minutes walk away and Tilly’s for breakfast was fantastic.

We stopped at the Crocky trail which is 20 minutes drive away. And there’s lots of other options for things to do in the area.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked We absolutely loved it here and will defiantly be back! As soon as you arrive you can see how well kept the site is, every aspect of it. The land is beautiful, the shower & toilet area is clean. The shower itself was hot and perfect for camping.
The weather forecast was predicted bad so we were so lucky to have the site to ourselves and even luckier with the forecast being totally wrong. The pitches are great, the dogs absolutely loved it. The owners were lovely, helpful and very welcoming. We only did one night to test out our new tent box, but will defiantly be back. Thanks for having us Alex & family!

Disliked Absolutely nothing!

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Friendly owner who welcomed us and was super helpful, campsite was clean and tidy. Had nice amenities to be able to make fires and accommodating to bbqs. Very easy to drive to different places but was a calm and relaxed environment. There’s only a small sign when going in so was tricky to find initially as maps tells you it’s the buildings across the road. Once you know where it is it’s super easy to get around the local area

Local attractions

Younger kids may not give you any peace until you’ve taken them to The Ice Cream Farm (15 minutes’ drive) to sample more than 40 flavours of homemade ice cream and have a run around at the play area. The elephants, tigers and giraffes at Chester Zoo (half an hour) are likely to be second on the list, or you can go diving with sharks at Blue Planet Aquarium (35 minutes). Take the whole family to test their mettle on the zipwires and treetop rope courses at BeWILDerwood Cheshire (10 minutes’ drive), or make for the inflatable climbing course at Wild Shore Delamere waterpark (20 minutes), where you can also take wakeboarding and paddleboarding lessons. For far-reaching views to the Peckforton Hills, climb up to Beeston Castle (45 minutes’ walk) on its rocky crag. Have an urban day out among the indie shops, Roman walls and Tudor half-timbered buildings of Chester, and if you’re bargain hunting, browse the fashion shops at Designer Outlet Cheshire Oaks (both 35 minutes’ drive).
