  • Friendly, quiet Northumberland site 15 minutes’ walk to Hadrian’s Wall
  • C2C and Pennine Way five minutes’ drive; Roman museums 10 minutes
  • Abundant wildlife; dogs welcome; essentials shop and morning café
You’re guaranteed the warmest of welcomes at Hadrian’s Wall Campsite, a peaceful spot edging the spectacular Northumberland National Park in the Tyne Valley. And what else are you guaranteed? An equally friendly greeting for any accompanying dogs, great views from everywhere on site, quiet downtime for you and your family and – on clear nights – a multitude of stars twinkling in the heavens of this dark skies reserve. Here you can also wake up to birdsong, walk to Hadrian’s Wall in 15 minutes, complete sections of the Coast to Coast Cycle Route (C2C) or the Pennine Way, and get back to your pitch in time to catch colourful skies as the sun sets behind the hills. If you’d rather simply chill amid nature during the day, the site’s abundant wildlife makes it a great place for spotting hedgehogs, stoats and wild rabbits. Essentials are sold in the small site shop, along with tasty locally made biscuits, chutneys, jams and ice cream. A café opens in the morning and does a roaring trade in breakfast rolls made with sausages, eggs and bacon from the butcher in Haltwhistle, 10 minutes’ drive away – wash them down with Northumberland-roasted barista coffee and milk from a neighbouring farm. Spotless showers, a washing-up area, a fridge and freezer, and a laundry with washer and dryer complete the roster of on-site facilities.

What customers say

This campsite gets rave reviews for its gorgeous location, spotless facilities, and super friendly staff. Guests love the roomy, private spots, natural beauty for walks, and handy shop/cafe. While mostly fantastic, a few mentioned pitch spacing and water access. It's peaceful, well-run, and guests want to come back!

Meadow shepherd's hut

Liked The views were lovely.
It was great not having to leave the hut for the toilet.
The very much needed log burner was a god send!

Disliked I am aware it’s expected to be small but there was no where to store non fridge items such as bread, biscuits etc. We had to jig around things on the shelves to make some space and keep the rest in bags on the floor.
Small things could be added to the hut such as a few extra hooks, a small fold up table to eat from and a dust pan and brush. The grass was cut shortly after we arrived and was damp so the grass was trailed in the hut constantly, this got everywhere and we had nothing to sweep it out with.
The heater kept going off with an error code.
The windows didn’t seem to close fully so there was a constant draft and it was nearing freezing overnight.

Power optional cement/asphalt RV campsite

Liked Hadrians Wall Campsite, in a nutshell, what’s not to like?

Arrived on site where I was warmly greeted in reception and given a detailed run down, not just of the facilities but all the local attractions, shops, pubs etc and how to reach them, whether on foot or by bus.I was escorted to my ample hardstanding gravel pitch complete with 16amp electric and water tap. The campsite has a small shop in reception for basics, a laundry and very smart toilets and free showers. There’s also an information point with a guide to sightseeing, bus timetables, and recommended pubs/restaurants with menus and prices.

The AD122 bus runs every two hours, east to west following Hadrians Wall and enables access to all historic locations between Walltown and Hexham. The Roman Army Museum, Vindolanda, Sill Landscape Centre to name just a few. The unmarked bus stop itself is just a five minute walk from the site (maybe ten if you’re a slow walker) and is at the Melridge Road junction where you must flag it down. Haltwhistle town can also be reached by bus but if you’re not in a hurry I’d recommend the public footpath which takes you to the town via a very nice walk over the adjoining countryside and takes about 45 minutes. Hadrians Wall is within walking distance as are many of the local features. I walked from the campsite first to Haltwhistle and from there to Walltown to visit the excellent Roman Army Museum. The following day I caught the bus back to Walltown and walked from there along Hadrians Wall to Cawfields Quarry ( just over three miles) where there are stunning sections of intact wall to be seen. The nearby Milestone pub is great way to finish a days walking.

Hadrians Wall Campsite is perfectly situated for seeing everything related to Hadrians Wall. It’s a friendly, welcoming and well organised site, providing quiet space and all you need for an enjoyable stay. I had a wonderful five nights here and filled every day with amazing walks, historic sites and excellent food and drink. I highly recommend, you won’t be dissappointed.

Disliked Quite funny really and not so much of a dislike as a friendly warning. If you take a shower early in the morning before it’s light and no one is around, the lights in the block are motion activated. Once you’re in the shower it’s likely that after a few minutes you'll find yourself fumbling around in the darkness when the lights go off….so either be ready for it or don’t take too long!

Local attractions

Many of Northumberland’s attractions are within easy walking or cycling distance; you can access both the C2C and the Pennine Way under five minutes away by car at Once Brewed, while the Northumberland 250 driving route, taking in the national park and the coastline, is about the same distance away. You are in pole position to explore Hadrian’s Wall too – it’s barely 15 minutes’ walk away, bringing with it stunning views over Northumberland’s wild fells and valleys. A trifecta of fascinating museums includes Vindolanda Roman Museum, where you can explore the remains of a Roman village; Housesteads Roman Fort – Vercovicium has sprawling relics from a hilltop fort; and the Roman Army Museum (all within 10 minutes’ drive) offers up immersive displays on ancient Roman life at Hadrian’s Wall. If the kids are rebelling against all that history, try them on the “Shaun the Sheep” art trail and the engaging wildlife exhibits at The Sill: National Landscape Discovery Centre (five minutes).
