  • Laidback family-run site behind a Northumberland country pub
  • Berwick-upon-Tweed 10 minutes' drive; half an hour to Holy Island
  • Barbecues allowed; dogs and kids welcome; easy access to the A698
This is a fine location indeed for a Northumberland night or few… The pitches at The Salutation Inn are just off the A698, the main road running between Berwick-upon-Tweed and Coldstream (about 10 minutes' drive from both), so they're easy to get to and well placed for all sorts of days out. What those days out involve is totally up to you: it could be walks and cycling in the Northumberland National Park, wildlife watching along the coast and out on the Farne Islands or exploring castles (including one that’s been visited by a certain boy wizard…) and other historic sights. Golf, fishing, watersports, horse riding…there’s plenty of choice around this scenic area. Your base for all these outings will be a laidback family-run site with spacious pitches where all kinds of guests are welcome: families, couples, groups, solo visitors and dog owners all included. There’s a good collection of guest facilities available, including a washing-up area, a chemical disposal point and a clean modern bathroom block with showers and toilets. You’re welcome to bring a barbecue, and can pick up supplies in either of the nearby towns or the butcher in Norham (five minutes' drive). As you may have guessed from the name, this site is next to a country pub that serves a good range of drinks for your evening tipple.

Liked Warden was lovely, and some nice static caravan folks who made a fuss of the dog. He loved it.

Disliked Main reason, far too close to the road. The traffic noise is awful, like trying to sleep in a layby on the m62.
It is undergoing new management changes, the toilets wern't that clean and the doors took some manipulating till they locked. The spider webs on the cystern were scruffy and Although the smell of flash was over whelming and the toilet rolls were plenty it could have done with a massive bleach scrub and a good old proper clean. The muck had been moved around the floor, not really cleaned and although one shower appeared to be functional (didnt use it) as the other shower curtain was chucked in the floor of the shower next door. Nothing to dry your hands on either. as for the sinks to wash up your dirty dishes? I couldnt bring myself to put my dirty dishes in the sink as the sinks were dirtier than my dishes were( i had made curry) We ended up boiling the kettle and washing out our own dishes in the van.
We were Woken at 4 in the morning by a clash of what sounded like farmyard gates and a car horn to say thanks for opening the gates. I had no idea what that was at the time but now i think about it..
The pub next door was shut, no food or meals available (pleased i brought my own) and nowhere realy to relax. Dont know if this is part of the new management / renovation. Anyway, not impressed at all :( but everyone has an opinion, please go and form your own. Thanks

Liked Small, quiet and well kept site, ?owner really friendly and helpful, wouldn’t leave until he knew we were settled.

Disliked We are self contained so didn’t use any of the facilities. There is a road running alongside the site but this didn’t bother us at all.

Power optional grass campsite

Liked The owner/ manager was friendly and attentive

Disliked Location and campsite itself
Description states there is a country pub on site which there isn’t, it has been closed since 2018 nothing left of the pub from the looks of it. Got told modern toilets and showers which was the total opposite, disgusting! Nothing for kids other than grass, no where to wash up and what I thought was for washing up was outdoor sink full of dirt, insects and god knows what else with only cold water, couldn’t bring ourselves to endure a second night so packed up early the first thing next morning. Description and pictures on the advertisement seriously need updating as was nothing like we imagined!

Local attractions

Northumberland is full of gorgeous scenery, so it’s a wonderful place for a walk. That could be in the northern stretches of the Northumberland National Park or along part of St. Cuthbert’s Way, both around a half-hour drive away, or closer to home at places like the Duddo Five Stones (10 minutes’ drive) or Routin Linn Waterfall (20 minutes). There are some lovely walks along the coast, too, whether that’s a stroll around the Elizabethan walls and along the riverbank in Berwick-upon-Tweed (10 minutes) or a trip around the dramatic ruins of Lindisfarne Priory on Holy Island (half an hour). Boat trips from Seahouses (45 minutes) take you to the Farne Islands for puffin and seal spotting; back on land, there are more animal encounters at Hay Farm Heavy Horse Centre (15 minutes). And how about a castle or two? Bamburgh Castle (35 minutes) is in a fabulous beach-side location, and Alnwick Castle (45 minutes) is one of the largest inhabited castles in the country and played a starring role in the Harry Potter films.
