  • Luxurious underground houses in Ryedale, North Yorkshire
  • A 15-minute drive to Flamingo Land Resort, Castle Howard half an hour
  • Private hot tubs; dark-skies site with Howardian Hills views
Ever fancied burrowing away and living underground? Here’s your chance – and you only have to go to North Yorkshire to do it. The underground houses at Yorkshire Burrows are tucked into the grassy hillside, with truly spectacular views over the Howardian and Hambleton hills and wonderful sunsets as well. These warm and toasty luxury pods in Sinnington are fully kitted out with kingsize beds and stylish bathrooms with roomy showers and heated towel rails. Open-plan kitchen and living areas have plenty of space to cook in the oven and while away time gazing at the views. Outside, each pod has a private seating area that's just the spot for spotting hares and buzzards in the countryside surrounding you. Watch out for those amazing sunsets, and once the sun has gone down on clear nights, you’ll see a glittering display of stars far above – best appreciated from the luxury of your own bubbling hot tub. Barbecues are supplied on site, and you can pick up foodie treats from the delis in Pickering (10 minutes’ drive). There's a huge choice of pubs and restaurants close by too, in case you can drag yourselves away from those glorious views.

Pheasant's Roost 2 bedroom camping pod (hot tub)

Liked: We loved the views, the setting, the stars. This was a really great stay in a lovely unique dwelling. The burrow was cozy, well kitted out and well kept as was the surrounding site.

Hare's View camping pod (hot tub)

Liked: From the time I arrived to the time I left I loved this place. Wide open spaces ,beautiful blue skies and the sounds of a farm and birds. The Hares view was perfect , everything I needed was there including some stables, milk ,bread and eggs and some sweet treats and a bottle of wine. From the first evening one of the locals came to join me ,a beautiful grey cat sat in the doorstep enjoying the peace with me. The bed was so comfortable the shower hot with a great strong spray and omg the hot tub, never used one before but each evening after a shower I'd pop on my swimming costume and soak enjoying the view and allow the bubbles to take away the stress of the day. Lots of places to visit using the pod as a base but also perfect to just switch off and relax. I would definitely recommend this place to everyone whether a single traveller like me or as a romantic get away for a couple. The sunsets were a lovely end to each day and I was even lucky enough to spot an owl on my last evening there. 5 stars across the board from me I will defiantly visit again.

Hare's View camping pod (hot tub)

Liked: Very quiet, beautiful place. A lovely comfy sofa bed which is a surprise, as alot tend to be extremely uncomfortable. Has everything you need, just take yourself. Went for bonfire night with my little dog and she never heard a thing. Lovely views and not far from pickering or kirbymoorside. Owners were lovely and welcoming. Would definitely stay here again.

Local attractions

When it's time to leave your cosy little hideaway behind, there's plenty to do in the local area. Get the walking boots on and head for the North York Moors National Park (10 minutes’ drive) for myriad walking and biking trails, or more strenuous activities like rock climbing and abseiling. If you’d like to explore on horseback, stroll up to the stables in Sinnington village (15 minutes’ walk) for rural hacks. The daredevils among you can make a beeline for Go Ape Dalby for treetop rope courses and zipwires, or fast-paced downhill action at Dalby Forest Cycle Hub (both 20 minutes’ drive). For leisurely days out, tour Castle Howard (half an hour) or steam through moorland scenery on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, which runs from Pickering (10 minutes) to Whitby (40 minutes). Kids behaving? Let them loose on the rides at Flamingo Land Resort (15 minutes) or watch flying displays at the National Centre for Birds of Prey (20 minutes). There's also seaside fun at Scarborough (45 minutes) for sunny days, and plenty of museums in York (50 minutes) for less clement ones.
