Summer camping at castle howard lakeside holiday park

  • Well-maintained site with views over Castle Howard's Great Lake
  • Half an hour's walk or a five-minute drive from Castle Howard
  • Fishing and dog-walking area on site; close to a café and farm shop
Pitching up by a lake's a plus in more ways than one – as well as being an instant de-stresser, waterside surrounds can be a prime spot for fishing and, in the summer, ever-so-soothing boat trips. If you like the sound of that, hotfoot it down to Castle Howard Lakeside Holiday Park for views over Yorkshire’s poshest country estates. Fancy a stroll close to the water's edge? Go and seek out sweet and savoury goodies at the nearby café and farm shop (a mile away from site) – the latter can rustle up a nifty breakfast or barbecue pack that you can pick up on your arrival. There is also a shop on site selling a few essentials and lots of treats. Pick up a pint of milk, a bottle of wine, meat from the Castle Howard butcher or a tasty cake on site. The site's non-watery parts are also pretty splendid – this family-friendly park has a dedicated dog-walking area where you can admire mature trees while the pups and/or youngsters let off a little steam. It's also got handy practical features like smart loos and showers and a laundry room. While there's plenty of scope for sticking to the estate during your time here, active off-site jaunts around the Howardian Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty come highly recommended, too – the surrounding area's full of cycle paths, bridleways and hiking trails.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked: Clean facilities

Disliked: Avoid during busy times. It’s described as peaceful but it wasn’t. They really cram you in on the touring field - being told ‘we can get 50 units in easy’ might be true but it felt like a festival car park without a festival!!

Primitive grass campsite

Liked: Lovely open field, with access to the lake nearby. Shame you can't see the lake and castle from it. The showers were amazingly warm, and it was nice to have a washer and dryer on site too for a sensible price.

Disliked: Lack of view of the lake/castle. Field is a little more sloped than I would have liked...but that is me nitpicking!

From the manager: Many thanks Jonathan. The weather has been fantastic lately hasn't it? Just right for camping in our beautiful location. We're pleased that you found the facilities to your liking and that you will return.

Powered grass campsite

Liked: Wasn't overly impressed with anything if I'm honest.

Disliked: Quite a few things to be honest, big hole in the ground where we had to pitch was very uncomfortable but we had no choice to pitch there. The noise we had to endure from other campers and on both nights we were there we got woken up by a vehicle coming and going at 3am!!!!!!!

From the manager: Hello Stacey, thank you for taking the time to write your review. We were disappointed to read your comments and to find out that you didn't enjoy your visit to Lakeside. Thankfully, we find that your opinion is a rare one but we still appreciate what you have to say. We understand that our rural location isn't suited to everyone however most guests do love the location. We have to admit to being a little confused about the 'hole'. The pitch you had is one of two on a large grassy area and guests are permitted to choose anywhere on the patch avoiding any ruts that may have developed. Regarding the noise; the site guidelines are given to all our visitors on arrival; we trust that guests will adhere to them. Had we known after the first night that your neighbours were being noisy we could have had a discrete word with them but unfortunately, if we don't know we can't help.

From the manager: The Great Lake really is lovely at any time of year and we do get a spectacular view of Castle Howard from its banks don't we! We're glad you enjoyed your walks with your dog and hope to see you again.

Local attractions

Yorkshire folk are rightly proud of 'God's Own Country' – it's home to some of the finest historic houses, coast and countryside around. If you want to keep things local, head out to Kirkham Abbey (15 minutes' drive) to visit the ruins of the priory or for waterside strolls along the Derwent river. Like to be beside the seaside? Of course you do, and luckily this area has plenty of options to choose from. If you fancy venturing to Whitby's harbour and beaches, drive to Pickering (25 minutes) and hitch a ride on a steam train for a stonkingly scenic journey over the North York Moors. Bempton Cliffs Seabird Centre (an hour away) is a rather wilder beauty spot – this nature hub is home to about a quarter of a million nesting seabirds (so be sure to pack your binoculars). Art, architecture and landscaped grounds can all be rather moreish, so check out other historic houses in the area, like Nunnington Hall (20 minutes), Duncombe Park (25 minutes), Sledmere House (30 minutes) and Beningbrough Hall (40 minutes), if you fancy a change of scene on your blue-blooded escapades.
